Block,

Just FYI from someone who works the flightline. We try very hard to get guys to follow the pattern, oftentimes giving "input" to the pilot. Some follow it better than others. The last thing we want to see on our shift is any "rekitting" or worse. I'm amazed how many guys have problems flying a clockwise or counter-clockwise racetrack pattern...

Most pilots kept to the pattern as much as they could but a few knobs didn't seem to give a damn. I was the spotter in the first mid-air and my pilot was flying the pattern and was aware of the other two planes ahead. One of the two was flying his own pattern. Result was a bang and one destroyed plane.

Not getting on your case here Rob but I thought that the officials were too casual especially considering incident of last year. There were a couple of pilots that I would have grounded. Have to share the airspace in a respectful manner or go home.

An awesome event and it seems to get better every year. You guys throw one heck of a party.

What Rob says holds VERY true.

As a NEAT flight line official all I would ask pilots who were scolded to think about 1 thing. Would you do what you are currently doing at NEAT at your own home field?

Would you fly out of bounds over and over again?

Would you fly longer then the allotted time limit?

Would you fly behind the flight line?

Would you walk off with the frequency pin?

Would you take off into a sky not knowing the pattern or worse yet seeing that there was no apparent established pattern at the moment.

Would you walk across an active flight line over and over again to photograph models flying off the pond?

If you can answer yes to those questions I bet you had a run in with your local Field Marshal as well!! Pilots and officials have to work together to maintain a safe flight line. All I want is for the pilots to fly safely and have a great time at NEAT!

My Cabin was well away from those loudspeakers and each morning I was awakened by Tom's message. Part of the message if you listened was the direction of the pattern.

FWIW the accident as described above happened when the pilots were flying off the casual board.

all i did was be nice to any of the staff and guess what? they where nice right back.
while i stood in line waiting my turn, i would ask direction of flight (that is if i didn't know or hear Tom say it).
IMO, the direction looks confusing because the flight area is a little deceptive. it's a lot deeper than it looks, although, not by much. pilots tend to stay shy of the wood line and make there turns too shallow. this causes them to fly down the middle or to far out and that's when accidents happen.

can anyone tell me how many mid-air's there where? i only counted two and that dosen't include the mass war bird fly. that's not too bad for how many planes flew during the fair.

Tommy,
what are you trying to say in your last sentence?

The Mid-Air that took place Sat nite was after NEAT officials had handed control off to the casual board. Its the responsibility of the collective pilots and spotters on the field flying at that time to establish a pattern and maintain it.

Hope that makes sense.

Sorry we didn't hook up ,you seen me though on that stupid bike . I watched the two planes meet cowl to cowl head on...one being totally opposite the flight pattern. Cool to watch and hear the thud but sucks when it's yours .....I was happy to see they were cool about it and made peace. Tom was my wake up call and I was at the end by the parkflyers, it echoed but I heard him.I had a few close ones with pilots flying over my camp and flightline crowds....seemed lax in areas and rude in others but all in all...Tell me the night fly wasn't funny as hell

Hi Gang,
Great pics, especially the aerials.

Definitely saw problems with pilots keeping to a race-track pattern, especially on Friday with the winds switching back and forth every 10 minutes. Some decided to keep switching the pattern depending on the wind, instead of what was called. At my field, Green Mountain RC, we have a simple arrow mounted at the pilot stations to visually indicate the pattern direction. Might help to do that for next year.

Awesome time this year, fantastic job by Tom Hunt and SEFLI crew. I got chewed out for overflights of the park fliers several times but deserved it. The flight line crews were pretty much on top of it all the time. I couldn't even sneak in to take pics :-(.

Hey Mike,

Appreciate the feedback. It's interesting that some guys tell me that the flightline guys are too strict, and that we're putting undo restrictions on the pilots. On the other hand, we also hear that we need to be quicker to react to pilots not following the rules, otherwise we risk airplanes and spectators. Bottom-line is that we try and walk a balanced line. Naturally we can't make everyone happy, and don't want to p*ss anyone off either. Makes for an interesting day

FWIW, and this isn't specific to Mike BTW, guys should consider volunteering next year to help out, especially on the flightline. With the amount of experience we have on the forums we could use the help and input. Not only is the experience great, but also provides an opportunity to give input to the process.

Right you are Rob. I volunteered for on-call medical and I'm more than willing to help out in another capacity next year. Just have to get Carlos to let me away from the BCSF tent for a while. Carlos, me, Gerry, Chris and Pat did all of the cooking for breakfast and dinner for club members and the vendors. Did you have any of the fried turkey or fried Oreos?

Carlos insisted that I stop by the tent Saturday night for a snack I had an opportunity to try the fried Oreos, fried Snickers bar, and some of the fried Oatmeal Cream pie. Very yummy! And I had just enough room left to try some of the deep-fried turkey. Nice! Got my sugar level up just right for some extended night flying

I got invited over (for helping keep the lights on) to try some fried Oreos. Never had one before. Damn they're good. What the hell have I been missing! Maybe next year I'll try my luck at the Texas Hold'em table.
What a great time, with a great bunch of people.
