Evo Power Switch

Crashed a brand-new DLG several weeks ago when it was in a bank, headed for a landing, and suddenly I had no control. The same thing happened today, right after launching, and it gracefully arc’ed over in speed mode and just plowed into the ground. Major damage. In both cases, the TX worked after turning it on/off, and plane’s receiver and servos responded to TX signals after the crash. This time I noticed that the Evo’s display was blank after the plane went down. Unfortunately, I don’t remember if the power LED was illuminated. Turned the TX off and back on, and all was normal. Shook it, slapped it, no problemo. Opened it and inspected ALL connections, tugged on the (soldered) battery cables. It works just like before.

I suspect that I may have touched the sliding power switch. Its detent is very weak, and it doesn’t power the TX until almost at the end of travel. I’ll probably never know, but will place the switch on the watch-list..

Otherwise, flying at Schnepf Farms was pretty good - lots of lift, but also large areas of sink. I couldn't even come close to keeping up with Charlie, Lee, John, and Vu, but you learn a little bit every time you fly with them.

Charles:

EVOs are serviced by Hitec. I have sent mine in three times since I bought it back in 2005. They got it back to me each time in about ten days, and never charged me a cent. (It hasn't been back to them since 2007).

If your display was blank, then most likely the power was off.

You can call them and see if they still do that.

Yours, Greg

The Evo power switch is notorious for just that kind of issue. Very sorry to see that happen to you.

Thanks! The switch is now on the pre-launch checklist.

The good thing is that the wing is creased, but repairable, and all control horns were ripped out. That'll make it easier to place it on the foam beds/shucks and locate the warp that was causing the plane to roll severely to the left.

Are ya'll flying at Schnepf Farms today? If so, then I hope the wind stays down. Must have been pretty gnarly yesterday afternoon.

How was flying at the Farm? I decided to fly closer to home.

Any one up for an early morning fly at the bowl tomorrow? I'm planning to be there around 6:30 to 8.

Sunglasses

I'd like to get a really good pair of sunglasses. Has anyone used Zurich? If so, which style (Standard/Pilot), tint (grey/rose) and level of darkness (Light/medium/dark)? Are there glasses that darken quickly to allow you to briefly stare at the sun, i.e. during launch?

Brown Raybans. Non-polarized. They almost wrap around. Model 8183 or 8186. These things make everything sharper. I can almost see the future with em! Lol!!
Not much you can do about flying in the sun unless you wear a welding mask. just avoid it, eh?

I currently use the Raybans (prescription) and they work well, raise the contrast, and make things sharper. The Zurich glasses do remove more glare than any glasses I've looked through, and allow you to fly closer to the very edges of the sun. It's still blinding to attempt launching into the sun or flying through the disc, but all that flash glare around the edges is gone with the Zurich shades.

Zurichs don't darken as light increases, but I use transition lens on some days and the rate of change is much too slow to fly through the sun. The transition lenses react from UV, and change gradually taking a few minutes to adapt to light changes.

CASL Field Parking

Heads up: No more parking at the CASL field!

Dana and I were flying this morning at the CASL dirt field, when the property manager showed up to tell us that parking is not allowed on the paved parking lot. He was notified by the owner. We can fly on the field, since it belongs to the city of Chandler, but would have to park on the road and walk around the buildings and parking lot to access it. Even traversing the parking lot on foot to get to the field could be considered trespassing.

This applies to all days of the week, so no parking even on weekends.
