P-51 Mustang Squadron Markings Reference Thread

Hello Folks!!
At the request of many in the Parkzone brushless BNF "Gunfighter" thread, I thought I'd make a special thread of as many P-51 paint schemes as possible.

My personal recommendation for having any decals done is to go with Callie Graphics. She has done decals for 4 planes in my "hanger". Two are finished, one is going to a museum. The other two are being finished soon. They look fantastic! If you want clean, smooth, great fitting decals that give you a very scale appearance, have Callie do them. She was recommended to me by the famous J. Morgan (master model builder). http://www.callie-graphics.com/

How this will work is that I'm in control of it's posts, to keep it on track. If you have additions to the thread, you can e-mail them to me at derik352@gmail.com (subject line- "P-51 paint schemes"), and I will gladly add them.

For the moment just to get things rolling, these are side profile artist's renditions in color. These are P-51s from the European Theater. There is still plenty more to be added just to the ETO series. There will also be Pacific Theater and Reno Racer schemes added soon.

Other possible additions will be Korean War era Mustangs. This thread will take a while to complete, but I think "complete" is an inaccurate word as new pics are popping out of attics and dusty old boxes everywhere. It will continue to grow...... hopefully.

Note: Some posts have duplicate profiles, and I decided to do that in case one comes out more clearer or shows something that the other didn't. In some cases I just had them in my files and threw them in any way.

NOTE:
If you don't see the plane you're looking for under it's Fighter Group listing, check the post called "Mixed Bag". I kinda had to just throw a bunch in there. Trying to sort them all out, and not duplicate them takes longer than I have time for. If you don't see the one you're looking for contact me. I'll see what I can do.

Some of these came from various websites. Most noted is a BIG "THANK YOU" to Peter Randall of the Little Friends website. His site is a treasure trove of information. Please visit his site and make a donation to keep him up and running. http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/

I go to his site daily and spend countless hours researching. By far the best WWII American Aviation site around.

Enjoy!!!!!

A note for historical correctness: It's a fact that the service the 332nd FG performed was no less dangerous than any other fighter group. They put their lives on the line just like anyone else in the war. But some facts have been heavily distorted over the years and the record needs to be set straight. I can personally confirm the below records as I have met Charles McGee, and some other war vets who have talked to the 332nd vets. They say the same you will read below. They had no aces, and they in fact lost 25 bombers to enemy aircraft. None-the-less, their achievement of becoming the FIRST all African-American fighter group in a time of adversity is one to be proud of.

"At least 25 bombers being escorted by the Tuskegee Airmen over Europe during World War II were shot down by enemy aircraft, according to a new Air Force report. The report contradicts the legend that the famed black aviators never lost a plane to fire from enemy aircraft. But historian William Holton said the discovery of lost bombers doesn't tarnish the unit's record.

"It's impossible not to lose bombers," said Holton, national historian for Tuskegee Airmen Inc. The report released March 28, 2007 was based on after-mission reports filed by both the bomber units and Tuskegee fighter groups, as well as missing air crew records and witness testimony, said Daniel Haulman, a historian at the Air Force Historical Research Agency at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery. The tally includes only cases where planes were shot down by enemy aircraft, Haulman said. No one disputed the airmen lost some planes to anti-aircraft guns and other fire from the ground. The 25 planes were shot down on five days: June 9, July 12, July 18 and July 20, 1944 and March 24, 1945, the Montgomery Advertiser reported."

The following is a summary of the combat record for the four squadrons of the 332nd Fighter Group. The list includes each pilot's name and official credit for enemy aircraft destroyed.
