Squealing sound at full throttle?

I have a new plane, my first 'big' electric bird. It's a Graupner AT-6. Running a Castle Phoenix 60, E-Flite Power 60 and 6s 3300 Zippy 20C Lipos.
I've had 8 flights with an APC 14x10 prop and there's been no problem. I wanted more low-end thrust and a slower landing speed so I tried an APC 15x8. On several high-speed passes I heard a squealing, whirring sound from the motor. I've searched on this topic and hear conflicting advice. Some say to retard the motor timing, others to advance? What's going on here?
Static power tests:
14x10 Amps 39, Watts 890
15x8 Amps 45, Watts 980

Sorry I don't have a answer for you. I am having a similar problem with my Phoenix ICE LITE 50. When I get to about 3/4 throttle I hear a noise that's hard to describe, like a squealing sound. It seem like the motor is turning on and off very very quickly so it continues to operate but with noise and slightly less power. As I move towards full throttle the noise stops and the motor runs smoothly and with full power.
Has anyone heard of this before? Is there a fix for this?
My motor is a Torque 2818/900 running with a 4S 2350 Lipo and a 12-6 E prop.

Squealing

Been described as squealing like a stuck pig. We are having the simular
issue with a ICE75. Crossing fingers, hoping Castle gets the next version
of software right. Mine just gets worst as the throttle is increased. Never
gets better.

your controller is coming out of sink with the motor. Set timing to low advance and throttle to medium advance. Try that should fix your problem.

I fixed that same problem with my ice 75 by replacing it with a scorpion esc, lol
Works great now.

Tech support shrugged and told me to send my motor in to get fixed

As we have said (several times) we are aware of the issue -- there is a new version of software that will be available this week that resolves the squealing issue on high inductance outrunners.

I had this with an AXI motor and controller in a 27% Extra. Model lost power at a bad time (turning to base on maiden flight) and crashed, destroyed.

Sounded like a bad bearing, but comes and goes?

There's no information about this issue on the site but the latest download of CastleLink software is crippled (an old version 3.13)... It's Friday night and no information whatsoever

Come on Patrick: what's going on? Have the engineers actually identified the problem yet? When will the fix be posted? And are other firmware versions affected?

The fix is in Alpha testing right now. We have identified the issue, fixed the issue, and have testing going on now to make sure we didn't break something else while fixing this issue -- (I'm sure you know how it is with software!!!)

Of course, but I think being a bit more informative would not hurt Castle! Especially the silence on your own homepage! If you know about this issue you could post a warning. And the trick to prevent more people from downloading the broken firmware is also a bit odd.

Which firmware versions are affected btw? Should I keep my helis grounded this weekend? I'm on 1.61

I guess I don't understand. There isn't any issue with the current firmware, the motor run algorithms haven't changed recently. This is just an upgrade for newer, high inductance outrunners that have recently come to market. The original algorithm sometimes has an issue with synchronizing when high inductance motors are pushed to the saturation point. We are simply updating the motor run algorithm to handle these types of motors better.

I, too, am confused. Aren't you fixing something with V2.18 in this thread?

Lots of burnt up motors and crashed aircraft/helis out there at this point, admitting to the problem here or on the castle homepage could be quite expensive for castle, not to mention embarassing.

There is a problem with the new firmware on any high pole count outrunner, not just "new to the market" motors.
I wouldn't fly if you've got the new firmware in there, wait for the fix...

Took my ICE 50 out. Put in my old Phoenix 45 with external Castle BEC and everything works just fine now. I want to use the ICE LITE 50 and I have faith that they will fix it. However, this is very disappointing and frustrating. I fly ARFs, I want to put it together and fly, not download software, swap ESCs and hope it works. This is supposed to be my liesure time. I want Castle to tell me that an ICE LITE 50 works perfectly with a Torque 2818/900 spinning a 12-6 E prop on a 4S system BEFORE I put it back in my 48" plane. Can you guys do that for me Patrick?

With firmware 2.16, mine works. Had a timing loss problem with 2.18 today, though, same setup but 3s.
