Brad,
Don't be scared off! The HET 6904 is an excellent, proven fan.
The only reason the *warning* came up is because you're pumping ALOT of power through the fan/JS1400 on 5s. As with ALL fans, you just gotta make sure your fan is balanced well, and doesn't stretch too much when you start spinning them at the very high levels achieved with the above setup.

As for my recommendation...
Yes, I love the Lander's Fan Shroud (Aluminum, slightly heavier, but makes for a strong fan shroud and an excellent heat sink, even on the JS1400 with a stand off mount.
However, I also like the Minifan Pro Rotor! From my experience, it's a bit tougher than the Lander's stock rotor (which is also a good rotor), provides just a touch more thrust, and will undoubtedly handle the higher power levels alot better (less stretch/warpage). Not to mention it comes dynamically balanced!

Schubies are also great fans.
You are right, they are preeeetty pricy... not to mention pretty fragile... but they definitely make up for that in performance!

If you're looking for EDF stuff online, I must throw in the obligatory www.EJF.com
Great prices, excellent service. We've got all the stuff mentioned above with the exception of the Schubie.

Vic

The ones I'm building, one is HET 90 mm using HET inrunner on 8S(customer) and the other is 4" Hoyae using Hacker outrunner on 5S(mine). Pulling alot less AMPs 60 vs 105. I'm putting out approx. 4 lbs of thrust. No inlet tube, but I'm using the Aux inlet on mine but no blow in doors. Pictures going up soon.

If you can bear 3-4 months of brutally hot summer (we just wake up earlier to go fly ), the rest of the year is NIIIICE.
Lots of great talent here too! Bob Ruff is a legend, Clay Sherrow helped pioneer the new BIG EDF stuff, Electric Jet Factory was probably one of the first EDF guys seriously 'on the scene', and lets not forget Jim Drew and XPS, paving the way for the next generation of Speed Demons!!!
Plus the AMA field, Superstition Airpark is home to the AZ Jet Rally and the AZ Electric Festival, some of the most well known events in the Jet/E-Flying world.

See, now you are just teasing me, LOL I know theres also some GREAT nitro off road tracks and rock crawling areas. Not to mention full scale drag strips, smog free counties (thats important for us hot rod people), and tan girls. Is EJF hiring?????

OK, back on track. Plane will be here tomorrow, I'll get pics of the air inlet for calculation purposes and post pics of all the virgin parts. Should I be worried about 27 year old balsa wood?

Looks like they have a 70mm unit coming soon, but are pricey! Where is a good store to buy online from? The EDF stuff seems to be in short supply at the usual A Main and Tower sites I shop on.
You just need to brake it in well, and make sure it's running smooth. it's alot of power!

i've also got a schubie 70mm DS-30. very nice fan! expensive($250), and you need to cut the end off, but very nice. i just ran one up to 75,000rpm, so you know the fan can take the power.

Tam from tamjets might be able to get you a DS-30. The 6904 is available from ejf.com for about $35.

Thanks all. Its here! Its here! I just opened it up and took a quick look and some pictures. I think there might be a couple balsa pieces missing. I'll have to lay everything out later and check, but no biggy. Also I mis-read the ad, it didnt come with the .21 engine. Again, no biggy. I still feel I got a good deal and cant wait to start building with all of your input. On to the pics.

OK, there isnt balsa missing, looks like previous builder had actually started construction. I'm doing some planning here and have looked at the pics you guys posted of where your fans where mounted and trying to determine how and where I will put mine. I've also found some 3" ID carbon fiber tubing I was thinking of using for the ducting. Heres what PO has already done. Note the bulkhead for mounting the old Axiflo fan has come detached. Looks like he barely glued it in and used different glue than other stuff he had done. Also the bulkhead forward of that one is cracked and split on the bottom, so I think I may remake (or perhaps add a layer to) that piece out of some thicker ply and mount my EDF to it. Last two pics, the upper half of fuselage is way wider than lower half (I dont think he followed directions, LOL), so I am presently cutting out the glue bridge between glass and wood bulkheads and gonna attempt to make it match lower half. I might even chop the nose back off and line them all up, its driving me nuts how poorly he started this project and I'm not evn a perfectionist!! Any good glue choices? My motor mount idea sound good? Is there any type of solvent for loosening glue?

Ordered up an RCLander 68mm EDF and mount, waiting to hear back from Scott at Little Screamers. In the meantime, I managed to separate the cowl PO glued on and separate the balsa from the upper fuselage and line everything up right. I didnt like the way the kit instructions have you put three pins in the upper fuselage and just slide it under cowl, so I made a receptacle for the pins and sanded down the cowl on the trailing edge to make it smaller and line up better with fuselage. With any luck, the three pieces will look like one some day!

Thats the plan! Right now I am trying to figure where fore and aft to mount the fan unit and best/lightest material to make the ducting from.
