House Of Balsa F-86.
Hey all, new guy here from California, name is Brad. I just stumbled upon (and bought!) a new in box HOB F-86 from 1982, complete with the fan unit and .21 engine for what I consider a very reasonable price. While researching I have discovered this kit is now made by EJF with modern touches and specifically an EDF setup. I am planning on using an EDF instead of the gas engine and found Hoser's thread from 5 years ago on here about ducting the fan, but has the last 5 years shown any improvements in EDF's available to retrofit into this model? I'm farely new to RC airplanes and what the hot items to use are, all my RC experience is with electric and gas off road cars. Any help steering me in the correct direction would be appreciated. I have always been in love with F-86's, so this is a dream come true. I think I will be finishing it in the Utah Air National Guard theme as shown on BVM's website. Hopefully Hoser see's this and can give insight on to how he would do his build with products available today and I know the gentleman from EJF is on here, perhaps he can go into detail about the changes to the plane in the last 27 years? I'll also be looking into ideas for retracts, tires, and radio electronics (I currently have a Spektrum DX6i), etc etc. Thanks guys!

Welcome to RCGroups! I've done 4 EDF conversions of the F-86. I'll post some pictures later this afternoon.

Hi Brad,
I would think one of the high power 70mm units would be the ticket and you wouldn't need the cheater hole. My dad built one of these 15+ years ago and never flew it because of the lack of acceleration on RK20 and HB21 motor. Knowing what I know now, I could get it flying well on electric power, but you can bet I'd put an inlet duct in it! Steve C (also in CA) |

Welcome to RCG Brad!
I'm not Robert, (Owner of Electric Jet Factory) but I've got one of the original HOB F-86's on the table as well! Although you'l probably finish yours before I finish mine up... way too many projects on the table right now... ![]() For starters, check out this thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217252 Lots of good information and detailed work pics. As for setup, any good 90mm setup (1500+ watts) should be more than enough for this one... and carefully built you should expect an AUW of around 5-6lbs. Retracts are sort of up to your own personal preference; I will probably go with some Spring Airs ![]() And lastly, your DX6i will be fine. Just make sure you run at least an AR6200 or higher rx. Hope that gets you started! Post pics when you get the chance! Vic |

Thanks Bob, looking forward to pics! Steve, I am hoping to stay away from any additional cheater holes, so any ideas are welcome! I have yet to receive the kit, it ships tomorrow and should be here Wednesday or Thursday. I feel like a kid at Christmas! I'll go ahead and start posting pics here when I get it and make this my build thread.

Vic, I wouldnt count on me finishing first. I have a 1:1 1967 Dodge truck getting full '96 Corvette suspension taking up my work space! I have read that thread you posted, good info. Thanks for the recommendations.

The big'ole cheater hole was originally designed for the much larger stock gas fan.
With the newer 90mm stuff we're getting ALOT more power! I built up the center section of my wing without the cheater hole and plan on running it with the blow-in doors and an intake ring on my fan; no other intake work. Vic |

70mm fans are getting 4 lbs of thrust these days and they don't require large inlets. That's the trend anyway. 90mm are flying the JHH model and it's much larger. If I were doing it, and I may
, I'd use the smaller fan and probably a JS1400 since they don't have a problem with high power and you can't beat the price. Everyone has their own oppinion (rightly so ) and mine is that a proper inlet duct makes your plane climb better and fly longer from needing less power to cruise. I think it would be worth making one for this plane. Steve C |

Thanks Bob for the pics! Once my new toy is here I can actually see what I am working with. Steve, I have no clue what a JS1400 is (noob), but I probably already like it!

First, the HOB/PFS/EJF F-86 is a sweet plane, you will love it.
Its still all about Watts per lb. Like Bob, I've done a couple of HOB F-86 jets. If it can fly with nicads, brushed motor, 90mm fan and landing gear then you can sure get a lipoly, brushless set up with a 70mm fan thats just as good if not better. I found that the 90mm fan set up flew better with the cheater whole, I think the inlet without it is just to small for 90mm. The down side of ducting is that it rakes away space for batteries. If I were to build another one I would go with a 70mm fan, and a motor battery combo that gets you 1kw or more. A few of the important links to go through for the plane EJF-86 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217252 also Hob/ejf F-86 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=65021 hey bruff! help with f86 http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23287 As you can see, Bruffs the man for the HOB F-86 Ken |

I'm building two F-86 now. I'll post some pictures of the build if that is alright? One is foam wing and retracts and the other is wood built up wing and fixed gear.
Maybe I should try the 70 mm version. I was going to install a 4" fan with Hacker A40 out runner. Bob |
