yeah a proper power off landing can be a thing of beauty. Have you ever flown a tailwheel plane? If not try this in one of the cessnas. on landing keep the nose wheel off the ground throughout the landing AND roll-out until you start to lose elevator authority then lower the nose wheel. Try to make it so that when the mains touch the nose attitude does not change at all. You'll still have the forward CG vs pivot point so rudder control wont be near as important. Actually the only way I can describe the rudder work required for tailwheel is to let a toddler loose on the passenger side floor and tie a couple suckers to the pedals.

so in order to test if motor is proper, i put on 13x6.5 prop... only battery i have is 3s sky lipo... and very strange thing is, i didnt go over 15% throttle but i could feel my esc getting warmer in the same sec i turn on throttle...?? esc is ice lite 75. should i be vorried? or it is because amp draw is over 3s batterie capabilites?

you're probably fine. Static tests with limited airflow typically produce more heat anyway.

Moved them back to the wing tube tonight and flew both the 3700 & 4000, couldn't tell much difference, harriers great as usual, I did get a good torque roll of about 3 rotations. Batteries were 65 deg, plane still feels under powered as its taking almost full throttle to hover, It used to be more like 5/8. If I get a chance I'm going to warm them to about 90 deg f and see if that's the difference, otherwise the batteries must be deteriorating with age. They're about 2 years old, not puffed at all, well balanced.

Here is what I've been using: Hacker a40 750 kv, 14 x 7 apc, 4cell 3700, 6 min flights with at least 20% battery capacity remaining, this produced 74a and 1000 watts. I've got a scorpion 90 esc, the 75 should be fine although i would say its about the min I would use.

The extra prop 1" dia would prob help alot, I'll check tonight with the watt meter and see what is up.

I'm using a hacker x70 esc on an 610kv A40-12s on 4 cells with a 15x8 prop. It has unlimited vertical and hovers right around 2/3 throttle. so something is definitely wrong.

I'm not sure its the packs, The motor sounded "different" but after a year I may not remember exactly. It's easily flyable now but I wouldn't get to crazy below 50'.

Or maybe it is.... current tests: batt 1, 56a, 879w, 15.5 vm. batt 2, 58a, 889w, 15.3 vm. They were warm, not quite what they were a year ago. I guess even stored at 55% they're still going down hill, roughly a 21% decrease from new. That was in 10-2009.
I have 2 never used that I bought 10-2010 right before I stopped flying. Tomorrow I'll solder the connectors on and see how they do.

I liked it at the 1000w range, not sure if these batts can handle the larger prop.

it was upper 40s today, clear skies and 3-5 mph vrb winds so I got the plane out today. I double checked my CG and took her for a few spins. I moved the battery forward about 1/4" and that fixed the landing tail drop, however it was a little to nose heavy to fly most 3D stuff. What I found is that if the CG is about 1/4"-1/2" in front of the wing tube the plane lands almost hands off in 3pt attitude. moving the battery back so that it balanced frozen fingertips in the middle of the spar the tail wants to drop like before, it very controllable I'll just have to remember that on landings. I really like the way if flies with the more rearward CG so i'll be keeping it there. I still might add a thro-elev mix on a switch for landings, haven't decided yet. Thanks to everyone with the help on trying to get it sorted out!

Agreed . A 15x7 prop will rock it with that motor!
