Just bought an SC, and it is on its way to me already! Can't wait to fly this thing. What motor do you guys recommend for 5S, as I just purchased 3 5S 4000 packs from HC. I was thinking about a Scorpion, with a relatively low KV.

...the lowest Kv you can find in this size motor because you're a cell over the recommended 4S. At it is my 4S is swinging only a 14x7, and you'll want as slow a motor as possible so you don't have to drop the prop size too much.

The Motrolfly 3625-600(kv) would probably be a good fit (http://www.subsonicplanes.com/Motrolfly_Motors.html). Looking at their spec sheet the show a 14x8.5 prop with 5s 3200 (1400W , 76A) so would probably be similar (+/-) with a 5s 4000. I'm using the 800kv with 4s 3700 with great results.

I am a little worried about my ESC at those power levels. I only purchased an 80W ESC. Dropping down to a 14x7E prop lowers the input watts down to 1200W (910W Out)and a max draw of 65Amps and ups the efficiency to 80%. Thanks Mattk0, I am going to have to take a hard look at this motor.

I have the Torque 4016-500 in one of my 57" SCs. I have been using 5S 4000 mAh packs from Hobby King. I think it is too heavy. The trailing edge of the pack extends onto the wing tube to balance. It also rolls funny. It seems to have a wobble as that huge pack is rolling over. I bought all of this stuff before it became Ben's recommended motor. So, I had no guidance on pack sizes. I have another SC with a GR-45 that performs perfectly. I smile ear to ear every flight. Here is the combined motor and pack weight for a couple of motor and pack combinations. 27.5 oz seems too heavy. I have 4 more packs on order from HK. I ordered 2 of each of ben's recommended packs. I will let you know how they work out.

To have the same total capacity on 5S as you do on 4S 3700 mah pack you only need a 3000 mah 5S pack.

Dam, I am screwed now. Of coarse HC was out of everything so I purchased the 5s 4000's thinking I could not go wrong as most were complaining about the plane feeling too light. Initially I was looking to buy 6s3000 packs so I could also use on my Trex500ESP, but decided against it due to flight time. Maybe I need to go with a slightly lighter motor to get the overall weight down and still use the pack to balance. The problem is that HC is out of all the 30C packs and the prices jump way up, so I picked up a 4000mAh 20C pack to give me the 80A continuous rating, but on the edge. The total weight is 499g + 257g=756g or 26.7oz if I go with the Motrolfly 3625-600 solution. Please help as I am totally confused now. 80 amp 6s ESC and packs already purchased.

I will add my setup, just for comparison. I have a Scorpion 4020-8 which runs on 4s. This motor with the Rhino 4s 3700 weighs 26 ounces even (with prop adapter). It is a 1400w motor, and the plane is a rocket. I think I am just under 4 1/2 pounds RTF.

rod you sure? thats a 304 gram motor!
im running a 210g motor with the rhino 4s 3700 and right at 4 lbs 12oz.
also have you run a watt meter? id be curious what your cranking out.

cherokee you might also look at the turnigy aerodrive 42-50 650kv. for 5s you want 600-700 kv and for this plane 40-45mm diameter and 50mm+ length.

and your 80a will have no issues. im running a 15x7 on a 60a esc for temporary, 80a on the way.

Make that just under 5 pounds.. Right now it is apart so I can't verify, but looking back at my posts before I said it was 4 pounds 14 ounces.

it'll fly it just fine. this plane is so very lightly loaded, it'll handle it no worries.

in the down time though ive been working on something allitle special/unique for my SC to set it apart.........

Don't get in a tizzy over a few ounces, cherokee. The 4020-8 and 4020-10 and nice motors and give lots of headroom. Run 'em WOT at 1200W all day long and they won't break a sweat.

The Scorpion 4020-10 will swing a 14x7 on 5S burning 1200W. That kind of power will more than offset the weight of your battery and a couple ounces won't be noticable in the wing loading.

+1 Kendall. I don't have a lot of experience with this plane and a lot of different power systems, but the way it flies with my setup I can't imagine that a couple ounces would make a difference. The plane is just so awesome. I am really missing it. Waiting on my fuse...

I don't need it, but I guess I had to have it.
This is just after receiving my two new Slipstream planes, the Sbach342 and the MXS, both 72" machines.

Time to make a little more room in the garage!
