36" Shelly Foss build..revisited

after the initial wreck that was the first Shelly Foss.. i ventured in neck deep to another.
Learning from the multitude of mistakes i make in the last build..I laid off the beer ..put down the coffee for a moment and got a little dirty ..I pretty much have conquered the hull..
A carpenter I am not ..thats for sure but intent on seeing this through.. I am.

Pic's soon

The first is how she looks right now ..

the others are what she's supposed to look like when she's done ...

We'll see ..b its not cold enough to light the woodstove... yet ..

Think a 550 should be swinging a 2 1/2 " prop direct ?

MORE COFFEE- I thought I would pass on a bit of info as to a 550 size motor and the size propeller it can swing direct drive. First the “550” is the size of the case of the motor, it says nothing about the torque, RPM’s, voltage, or current the motor will consume under load.

To say flatly that a “550” motor can swing a 2 1/2” dia propeller can get you in a world of trouble if the motor is a high RPM motor with no torque. That is a recipe for burnt up speed controls, wires, and or motor. It is best to get the specs of the motor before trying to go direct drive to the prop. A lot of 550 and 600 size motors will run at 12 to 14,000 rpm on twelve volts and will be running a prop of 1 1/2” diameter at speed.

If it were me, and knowing that you are going to put the motors in a tug, I would go for the motor reduction gear box route for extreme torque and low amp draw.

Yeee Haaa !!!

Think i have the hull ..some sanding ..a little putty ....OK ..lots of sanding and lots of putty..power tool's ahoy

Have to finally get the cradle built..

then onto the fiber glass ..nearest i can get is the polyester automotive type resin ..It will set up fast ..can i use acetone to thin it, slow the harding time still get reasonable strenght ..also ..what glass? the stuff at the Hardware store seem's rather heavy .. General purpose they call it ..and then there's the stuff that looks like a wool mat .."chop" it think they refer to it as ..

Fittings..

Here's a few fitting I've amassed over the past year or more .. the liffe raft is as big as a door ..in pictures I've found the raft on the actual Shelly ..also appears as big as the doors hopfully
They do look a lot better than the Dumas supplied jobbies ..and the scale fits..

Marker LED's and stuff should be comming soon ..as long as i can find the brass to make the mast out off to act as a ground..it will make stringing the lights easier i think ..

Right on! Been wondering when you we're going to let us have a look. You'd better get the fiberglass done before winter sets in. Seems it's coming quick here.
I'm still sitting on the fence. Hoping the Invader get released again.

In light of the glass ..I picked up resin ,hardner ,fabric , acetone, and a few brushes...

Now what???

For my thicknes im guessing 2 drops of hardner for every ounce of resin.. its about 10C outside right now..

I can thin it with a little acetone from what i gathered ...how much is what i dont know...

Should i apply the resin to the hull first then apply the fabric ..follow up with another coat of resin ..and as many coats as is needed..

Should i thin the initial coat of resin..

I havent done this before so if i could get a 1/2 hr working time with this it would be most helpfull.. last time i dabbled in this it hardened up in less than 5 minutes.. and off course ..once i put the hardner in the urge to go pee kicked in and well crossed legged and sweating i really had to move fast .. wont happen this time ..
