A Modern Harbor Tug

Toesup Boat Werks update

I know the Boat Werks has been mysteriously quiet recently but I have been working feverishly on a project...

A little background first...
Waaaayyy back at about Christmas time last year, I was coming to the end of projects that were on the building board (lots more waiting in the wings though) and was thinking ahead to another tug.

I was Springer'd out, but still liked the proportions and maneuverability that the short / wide Springer hull form allows.

After a fruitless search for hulls / kit’s to suit my thoughts.. Mrs Toes suggested I make my own hull…. To which I replied “Have you any idea what that involves!!??”… but Mrs Toes said she thought it was a good idea… little did she realize what she had started..

So armed with some side views / plans of current Harbor Tugs and some sheets of trace, I started to sketch.. After some failed attempts, I came up with a side view that appealed to my eye.. and then came up with a plan view to suit.. Its 24” long X 11” wide and I tried to retain some of the flat bow that the Springer posses.. but with a sharper entry at the waterline..

Its more scale(ish) than a Springer obviously, but I think you can see some of its ‘heritage’..

After importing my sketches in to Autocad and getting some more accurate dimensions and filling in some of the missing bits (Superstructure, power etc) I made up some patterns and hull cross sections…

One evening, Mrs Toes and I were coming out of a restaurant to find a whole sheet of insulation foam lying in the car park (fallen off the back of a truck) which I promptly ‘liberated’ for modeling purposes..

Armed with the Autocad templates and sections I started to cut some foam. And after a while (and a LOT of cutting… and sanding… and mess) I was satisfied with the shape I had achieved and glassed the whole lot to form a plug…

Armed with some cardboard and some bondo... i added the bumper strips to the side of the hull shape...

After MUCH rubbing down and more mess i added some more glass to the whole thing..

It was at this time that a ‘move’ from Wa. back to Ca. was about to happen, so the ‘plug’ was packed away and didn’t re-emerge in the new workshop until about two months had passed..

After getting myself re acquainted with the design / plug and following a considerable amount of rubbing down with finer and finer sandpaper.. several coats of primer later, i ended up with this....

That looks neat! But isn't "plug" something that is used to make other hulls??

With the aid of several members on here, who deserve a BIG thank you for there assistance and patience...

Der Kap, Aerominded, Tug Boat Andy and Umi

I had the basic ideas on how to produce a mold / hull from my plug.

Recently I have been gaining some experience in doing glass fiber, never having done it before, making a split mold from the plug with the aid of a ‘cradle’…

As of last night… I Have produced my own Glass hull to my own design..

It’s a bit rough round the edges and probably wouldn’t pass Der Kap’s quality control.. but hey, its something I have produced from ‘nothing’…

Lots of lessons have been learned from doing this project...

Don’t gripe at the cost, time it takes or quality of a FG hull until you have tried to make one yourself…

I must have put hundreds of hours in to this project so far… and all I have is a FG hull…
