Scratchbuilt F4F Wildcat

Hey guys,

Just maidened my F4F today - been about a two and a half week project working at night. Made from 5mm depron, some carbon fiber, balsa stringers, and left-over radio/power gear. Motor is a 1700kv Motrolfly 2210 from my Yardbird jet, swinging a 8x4 APC prop. 3S 1500 mah lipo provides power.

It flew pretty good! I had it balanced with conservatively with a slight foward CG, so it didn't snap as fast as it could, or hover super easy. As well, I had a bit too much exponential in. Tracks well, is crisp, though, I did notice it had some coupling in knife edge... wanted to roll back out with rudder input.

Still working on a couple little kinks, such as the fusealge cracked where the battery is during a landing. As well, I had a bit of high speed flutter on the ailerons, which I think I have solved now.

Anywho, here's some pics of the progression!

I should have some more photos and video too shortly!

Kyle,
I like your basic Wildcat design. Interesting color scheme...did you model it after an early model production plane or just make it up? It definitely has the Wildcat look.
Nice job with the in-flight photos. It looks like it is flying pretty well, so congrats on a successful design and maiden flight!
I have a great time flying my simple Hobby Lobby Yak 3d...looks about the same as your Wildcat. It's amazing what a well balanced flat foamy can do.

Great job on your creation there...hope you have many happy flights!

Thanks Ken!

It's modeled after a training squadron that flew in the Great Lakes. Here's a photo:

It surprised me how well it flew, not only considering it was my first scratchbuilt plane (and from basically no plans), but also for being a small flat foamie.

I still need to figure out CG a bit more, as it is a bit of a handful to hover, and doesn't like knife edge flight very much.
