how do you make a foam wing airfoil???

How exactly do you "roll" an airfoil shape into foam? Do you hang foam off the edge of a table and roll a rolling pin over so the foam bends down? Or do you put the foam on top of a rolling pin and heat it? Or do you draw lines equally spaced lengthwise across the wing and bend at those lines? I just dont get it. All the threads I have read, people say "just roll an airfoil into the wing"... Easier said than done! haha So anyone that can describe how to do it, please do! or if there is somewhere else I should look, let me know.

Thanks,
James

I read that some guys heat the Depron and then rols it or bend it over and edge small steps at a time. I have tried it on a fuselage and it worked fine. But the heat is hard to get just right. It melts quick if it gets to much.

EPP foam is hard to deform except maybe with heat.
FFF can be deformed cold by rolling it with your hands on a pipe.

Well I am using FFF. I should have mentioned that. So I can just bend it across something? It will hold a shape like that? Should I heat it at all?

Quarter inch FFF
Skin one side
Rolled across PVC
No heat
Couple ribs, every thing stays put, no problem

is a link to see how it was done in the Blu-baby thread.
depending on the wing in question, you might not need the ribs even. My 33" BB doesn't need any ribs to keep the airfoil.
It just sounds terrible - really thought I was going to ruin it the first panel I curved like that.

FFF rolled w/o heat is weak. The GPW foam bender is popular. I use a couple 2x4s spaced 1/2" apart and a cheap Harbor Freight heat gun.

Note that "heat tempering" the non-skin side, even areas that are not curved, will increase strength and stiffness significantly.

An alternative method is my three-bend airfoil. See my blog.
Note, this works wonderful with BP Hobbies White Construction Foam. I have not tried this with other foam material yet. I use either a flat wing or a KFm with Depron.

FMX, the cold bend process is good if you're making ONE wing panel , for two identical panels , the Bendfoam jig is the easiest choice .. and you can bend one wing or 4000 + and have them all come out the same ... "D

Rusty: Your 3-bend airfoil is simple and works well I'm sure.
But I noticed that the airfoil doesn't go up to the end of the rib. Why is that?

I made the rib longer for the sole reason to add a bit of stiffness at the end of it, where it tapers to a point. I've also made them shorter to match, too.
