Cool
First DLG Dihedral Joint!--Whew!

I don't know how you guys make these $200 glue joints, day in and day out! My XP-3 dihedral joint/wing bold hardpoints are drying downstairs, and I've just now stopped shaking. How do you handle the stress!?

Peace,

Marc

I have one wing that's on its third joint.
1) joined it from the kit
2) one wing panel destroyed; cut and added another
3) put too much (17 degrees) of dihedral in an aileron wing on #2, so cut it down and reduced it to 13.5 degrees.

Re: First DLG Dihedral Joint!--Ugly but dead straight

Thanks for reassuring me that errors are recoverable, Peter.

I just checked mine, and the bottom needs a little sanding.
Otherwise, A-OK. It's going to a club (power club; I'm one of two wierd DLGers.) show and tell tonight; I'll glass it tomorrow.

Be well,

Marc

Marc,

It's the power guys who are weird!!

All that noise, sticky stuff on their models, and they are absolutely paranoid about their motors stopping.

A couple of beers and Phil's video and the next joint (dihederal, that is) will be a blast. (Heh, Heh).

Regards,

GaryO

Gary,

I told the club guys tonight that with 5 years flying diesels exclusively, I have lots of glider experience, so I am just continuing down the same road with my DLGs.

Marc,

The $200 glue joints are just practice for grabbing the $500 plane by the wingtip, spinning around like a nut, and hurling it into the air at 80mph.

That was good for a chuckle first thing this morning, Randy. Thanks for putting the world in perspective!

Be sure of the surface-to-surface contact. "Woodpecker" it a little bit. The tighter the fit, the stronger the joint. I you're really breaking planes at the joint (and not from a skin delam in an adjacent area), you need to use Kevlar tape over the joint. At least you'll see it fail before it departs the plane.

Well, actually the tape (and the spar epoxy bridge on a poly tip) gives the joint all of its strength. The instructions for the Encore don't even tell you to bother with any glue on the end of the cores in the center, and mine was very strong.
