When I see the pic above I want to pre-order the 70" gas slick soooooooo bad. Will there be any left in stock after you ship the pre-orders?? I'm asking because it might not be until the next paycheck depending on if I go to e-fest or not.

I decided to do a little cleanup and mods on my Slick this weekend and thought I'd pass on a few things I did and found.

A few weeks ago I notice some vibration sounds coming from the motor when doing some slow harrier flybys and wondered what could cause it. After taking the motor off the firewall I saw some black marks made from the X-mount of my Scorpion and figured it should have been clean since it was pressed against the wood. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the blind nut edge was very slightly protruding from two of the holes. It looks like with age (and vibration), the blind nuts have settled a little deeper into the wood. If the X-mount is braced directly against the blind nut, it will not be pressed against the firewall as much and will 'float' the blind nut and allow slight movement to create vibration.

To fix the problem I took some thicker heat shrink material and cut it up to sandwich between the X-mount and firewall. It seemed to be just thick enough to act as a shim. After doing a run up in the backyard, it sounded more secure but I'll need to do some flights to verify. For others with wooden or plastic standoffs this probably won't be a problem since the blind nut edge will settle into the material. If you use metal standoffs you might notice the same symptoms I did. Of course you could also take down the metal edge with a dremel or file if you choose.

On another note, I decided to take the dremel and cutoff the unused back side of the prop shaft from the Scorpion motor (after sealing it with tape and plastic) to prevent a pack puncture in the case of a crash. I also took some 1/2" foam harddrive packaging material and cut it to 4"x3 1/2" and wedged it against the firewall (similar to Ronrandle's method) for extra protection. It seems the dimensions were just right because it holds itself in place perfectly with friction. Its easy to pop it out with a screwdriver.

Also, I now realize why I don't need any standoffs with my motor. It seems that Scorpion has switched to a shorter shaft than the one I have to try and lower the sideloads to the bearings.

Just thought I'd pass along a few findings.

Happy flying,
Bruce

Looking good Bruce.

I did notice that I used spacers on my 4025 and you didn't and I guess I know the reason now.

FWIW, it's been raining like crazy for the last 3 days and it totally messed up my weekend flying. Kinda wish I was back in TX.

Having lived in Texas during the 1960's, I can unequivocally say that I can't imagine any circumstance where I would want to be back in Texas....

How about these circumstances today in Houston, Texas. Not bad for January! I sure enjoyed flying today... No clouds, no wind, 65 degrees...

Sounds kinda like me. (In a different place and time).
I was born, raised and lived my first 29 years in Calif.
I Love to visit there but, I wouldn't move back.

You must have been flying indoors....most of the parts of Texas that I have been in (and that is pretty much all over that state, as I was a traveling musician) were pretty much always windy...

I.E. ... a Texas wind guage.... a 30' telephone pole with 25' piece of logging chain, with a 100 pound boulder on the end... if it is at about a 15 degree angle, calm day, 30 to 45 degree a breezy day, straight out, a windy day, and if it is gone, a tornado....

Yearly average wind speed in central Texas is 10 mph. We have more calm day's than windy days. IIRC we have less wind here than most other areas in the country plus we have year round flying
