Data
90mm fan, Mega 22/20/3 6cell = 1750 watt!!!! what do you EDF gurus think?

Hi all,
Yesterday I downloaded data from my eLogger V3. Motor had only been run a couple of tests to check for vibration. No full speed more than 1 second.
The fan is mounted inside my model and the data that came out was like this:
Motor Mega 22/20/3
DesirePower 6cell 4900 mAh
Jeti Spin 75, lowest timing, soft start

Max 81A
Max 1751 watt
Volts 21.4
Max 27700 rpm

Hmm Do you think this will be good for a 2100-2200 gram model

Sincerely Marcus

Marcus, That Jeti spin 75 is too small for this setup. I have one of these in a pattern plane. Last week on my third flight the power cut out and the Jeti spin 75 would not re-arm until after the dead stick landing. I had the spin box with me and the error message revealed the cut out had occured because of an over amp of 83amps and a max temp of 53 degrees C. This happend about 3 min into the flight, I had plenty of battery left. The speed control is well vented in this airframe and OAT was about 25degrees C. Lucky I did not loose the model. I knew I was marginal with this speed control in this model and I do not want to loose it. So, I am replacing it with a Castle Creations Phoenix Ice 100. Just my opinion!

You'll have enough power for a 2200 gram model but those packs are quite large. For review stuff I've tried the new 3250mAh 40C ThunderPowers in a jet at 95A. Run great and not overheating though I do not fly WOT the whole flight. They also hold voltage extremely well. I'll 2nd the Jeti info. Use Spin Box and set temp cut off at the highest setting of 100C and make sure tons of airflow. You MAY get away w/ current but maybe not. I'd consider stepping up to larger ESC.

Thank you guys... Problem is, its allready mounted behind the motor in the exit-duct. Tough to get hands on :-(
I decided to use this ESC when we did the first testings. Back then I only did reach ~70Amps. I didnt have as good batteries then as I have today, thats wy the amp-draw is so much higher...
I do have a hextronic 120amp ESC laying around, problem is as mentioned to get it in...

Please visit my build log

Sincerely
Marcus

The motor is for 5s Lipo max.!
6s is over the top and I doubt the motor will last more than a couple flights.
Before you change the sped controller I would go back to 5s and a lighter battery.
You will still have plenty of power for a then about 2000g model.

hmm I have to correct myself, the fan is actually Haoye Midisize with 7 blades. Maybe just change for a WEMOTEC rotor would be the ticket..
Sorry for bumping.

thats couldnt hurt! hehe At 3kw that fan depsite it's thrusty appearance is actually inefficient enough that at 3kw for example, you will have 1 pound less thrust than a midi. But all those rotors have the same %30 inefficiency as the original sized rotor it was copied from which is the Vio rotor.

I'm with Oliver, except I don't think the motor would last even one whole flight. I had a 22-30 overheat on less power.

I'd say get a bigger motor for sure. Very nice construction on your plane though! That type of construction is getting rare.

Hi Barry,
The prototype has made 2 flights. Videos in my thread. The proto has a mega 22/20/2E (Kv 2250) on 4 cell 2500mAh battery. It managed ca 718W @ 54 A, thrust 1500 gram. AUW was 1650 gram.

My build will end at somewhat around 2200 gram AUW.

I really appreciate all your time and effort to get us less informed how to set-up these demanding EDFs.

Made another test today.
Battery fully charged, but charged yesterday...
Ive attached the eLogger file.
Temp A = Motor
Temp B = ESC
Temp C = Not connected

I think Ill go for a 5 cell setup to be safe. Ill order a 4 cell tomorrow. Ill then split the 4 cell into 2 x 2cell and the sixpack into 2 x 3 cell packs. Then Ive the options of going 4,5 and 6 cell setup in different planes.

JA 37 006 (1 min 46 sec)

Sincerely
Marcus

Some other questions.
Timing, shall I go with Low, medium or high?
Freq: 8kHz or 32 kHz?
All on the Spin ESC.
Sincerely
Marcus
