Indoor R/C Flying in the DFW Area for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010
The kids will be back in school and the regularly scheduled “Indoor Flying Season” will be starting up next week in the DFW area. We are fortunate to have two excellent sites that are centrally located between Dallas and Fort Worth.
At both sites discussed below, AMA membership is highly recommended, but not required. Also, a majority of us are now flying 2.4 GHz spread spectrum equipment, but if you are on 27, 49, 72, or 900 MHz, it is your responsibility to coordinate with others and maintain frequency discipline.
If you have been considering getting into indoor R/C (whether as a “nooby” or someone shrinking your horizons from outside to inside), you’ll find the folks in these groups eager to help. They will be glad to inspire, motivate, advise, teach you to fly, help you repair, and generally facilitate… so all you have to do is just show up and act interested.
Arlington (beginning next Tuesday, Aug 25):
In Arlington we can fly in the Elzie Odom Recreation Center located at 1601 N.E. Green Oaks Blvd. (817-459-6434). We are scheduled there every Tuesday from 9 am to 2 pm when school is in session, although much of the flying is concentrated in the two hours before and after noon. The hours are somewhat flexible, in that you might get in a little early or stay a little late if no one else has booked the time. Also be aware that higher priority activities occasionally bump us, so if you are coming from far away, you might want to call ahead to avoid disappointment.
This venue is a large arena (80’ x 180’) with a 25’ ceiling that is normally used for inline skating, basketball, etc. It has a separate, protected pit/spectator area, although the second floor balcony is unprotected and we need to be careful not to scare the folks up there.
The cost is usually $6 to fly and watching is free. Arlington residents have some lower cost alternatives, if they buy a recreation facility membership.
People bring everything you can imagine from Aero Aces and Radio Shack ornithopters to 3-D foamies and helicopters. Pretty much any flying machine that is appropriate for indoors is welcome, provided the pilot is able to act like a grown-up.
Bedford (beginning next Thursday, Aug 27):
In Bedford we fly in the gym at Bedford Boys Ranch located at 2801 Forest Ridge Dr. (817-952-2321. We are scheduled there every Thursday from 1 pm to 3 pm when school is in session. Flying and watching are free.
For those of you coming to Bedford for the first time, be aware that there is no real pit area, only sidelines (i.e., no place to hide), so aggressive or irresponsible flying is a particular “no-no”. While there are no hard and fast rules about what is appropriate to fly, the general idea is to be slow and in control. For this mission, light wing loadings help a lot… for example: Pico Tiger Moths, Park Zone “Minium” Series, Plantraco RTF’s, etc. Helicopters are OK, but you will basically be hovering off to the side, and anything bigger than Blade CP size is not really welcome, because of the danger to spectators.
Also, be sensitive to the fact that everyone wants to fly some, but not everyone is comfortable with a lot of traffic (like 6 or 7 Park Zones buzzing around); so give the less experienced folks, or people testing new aircraft, an opportunity to fly with fewer distractions.
An added attraction at Bedford is that before the R/C session, there is a free flight group flying from 10 am to 1 pm. If you’ve never had a chance to watch some rubber-band scale planes (sorry, no microfilm ships with the A/C running) flown by experts, show up early and see the original form of indoor flying.
