I wish the Sukoi were truly Ready To Fly in my intended venue instead of Buy, Bind, Modify, Fly, Modify some more, and Fly!

I moved the pushrod to the inner hole on rudder control horn and boy did it make a difference! I tried to do some knife edge flight, but it turned into more of a knife edge loop!
One thing to note if you're going to try this. You know how they have shrink wrap and glue on the ends of pushrods? As I was removing the pusrod from the control horn, the glue on the servo end let go and I had to re-glue it. Not very easy given the proximity to moving parts. Glad I noticed it before I got back in the air, though. |

Thanks, Brian, for that rudder and pushrod tip. I'll explore that before I try re-sizing the rudder again.
I noticed in the Horizon setup video/instructions, they did not even mention the rudder. I guess it comes with so little throw that there's no need for dual-rates or exponential on it that way. Baby steps towards something really flyable! Jim |

I flew my Sukoi today at the PG in too much wind. Did a loop from a dive. Did a left roll. Did a right roll. None of these were pretty, but I/it did them. Baby Steps!
My replacement prop was cross-threaded. At the end of the session my elevator had half a mind of its own, a tear. Am thinking the GWS prop is the next thing for me to try. But today's flying showed this plane, as I modified it so far, can actually fly in too much wind to be smart to fly it in! So I'll try to keep it flyable and in my van, just in case the weather cooperates. Jim |

I've flown my near-delta Sukhoi several more times, once up at Craig Alexander's in TN and several times at the Parade Grounds. I really like it with the GWS prop much better than with the stock prop.
I am not all that fond of the way the usual lunch-time winds around here toss it like a leaf! That makes it tough to tell how I'm coming on my settings/adjustments. I'll take it to St. Mary's tonight and try it in that full-court gym. The absence of wind should make quite a difference. I have the rudder in the center hole, perhaps I should go to the innermost hole. And/or am considering removing the folded tape rudder extension and adding new tape on both sides. That should give me a lot of potential rudder area extension. And any excess can just be cut off with scissors. I've been away on Monday nights for a while and I have lost track of how many Sukhois and how they are doing there. Jim |

Flew my near-delta Sukhoi tonight at St. Mary's. I think John hates me now. He has repeatedly tried to fly his stock Sukhoi there with nothing much except wall bumps to show for it.
I did much better. Still have a little sorting out to go yet. At the moment, my extended rudder will turn it left, but not right. That's Just Not Right! Also I need to figure out how to move the landing gear wheels forward. With my extended wing, it tends to tip over onto the nose on landing. Fortunately, there is enough torque to just gun it and flip it back upright! Jim |

I got the rudder problem figured out. One of the pushrod-carbon-wire joints was slightly loose. I pushed it back where it needed to be and applied CA on that and all such joints, just in case! I expect that to make a big difference in the rudder action.
I did not mess with my landing gear for now. Jim |

Jeff is flying his stock Suhkoi regularly at the Parade Grounds and is happy with his.
My Delta Sukhoi and my stock Sukhoi mostly ride around in the back of the van, just in case. I need another GWS 5045 for the "stock" one. I'm not happy with the 5030 that I have a bunch of. I have not yet seen as many Sukhois flying indoors as I originally expected. Then again, nobody else around here that I know of has modified theirs anything like I did to slow it down for the smaller indoor venues. Jim Last edited by Jim_Marconnet; Sep 21, 2009 at 05:55 PM. |

I smacked mine nose first on the pavement Friday, and now the motor is kinda pointing up. Believe it or not, it didn't bend the shaft!
The motor mount is a little loose, but nothing appears to be broken. I verified that it will still fly, but I'm not sure how well. Heh, maybe it will fly better now. |

Not Impressed with SU-26
I've put my SU back in the box. It just seems like too much work flying it. It is twitchy, underpowered and fragile. The Vapor is more fun to fly.
I'm thinking about MORE POWER! Any ideas for a motor/ESC replacement? I was very disapointed that the SU will not loop from level flight. Maybe with a bunch of mods it can be made to fly like it should. Not much of a BNF if you have to redesign it to fly decent. |

Hey there Tim!
My thoughts and observations match yours rather well on the Sukhoi. I switched from the stock prop to a GWS 5045 prop with a cute little push-on rubber prop adapter/spinner. That turned my Sukhoi in to a much better plane. It now loops from level flight. I also tried the 5030 prop before I got the highly-recommended one, but that did not do much for me. But I still leave it in the box mostly. Jeff flys his at the PG every now and then and he seems to have fun with it. He's still using the stock prop. So YMMV. Jim |

Throw the stock prop away and go with a GWS 5045. You'll like it much better.
You also need to get it balanced out. I put about 1 gram of lead in the rear of the fuselage and hot glued it in. Those 2 mods will make it worth keeping. |
