I wonder if thats the same Fred Herrmann I remember from a bazillion years ago at RCRC? Other names I remember are Hulan Rogers, Tim Batts(or Bass), Hanz Struik(spelling), Roger Juneman, Drew Thigpen, Ed Slayton, Buddy Wilson, Rusty Foster, Homer Mitchell.........wow I'm old.
Ed Slayton was a retired Sgt Major. He helped more than any one when I started in RC. |

But as always when I plot and plan, sometimes my plans change and change and change. Jeff's Sukhoi looked good today at the PG. I did not get to see it fly for long, nor did I assess how much room it needed. But it looked good to me what I saw. And he took it home in one piece. That's good for something! Jim |

OK, I just tried out a GWS 5043, and it's awesome! The 5x3 3-blade didn't work out so well, I think becuase the prop adapter I had to use is about 1 gram heavier than the stock setup.
I haven't got the cg just right yet, but it was still fun to fly, nonetheless. I also have a GWS 5030, but I haven't tried it yet. I highly recommend this setup! Grab you a GWS5043 and the 1.5mm from the GWS GW/SPN001 spinner pack from Rick's or gwsprops.com and have loads of fun! |

Maidened my modified Sukhoi this AM early
Believe it or not! I actually completed my first set of modifications and maidened my Sukhoi early this AM.
I added a large leading edge extension, making it nearly a delta. And I added tape to the rudder and elevator to increase their surfaces some. It wanted to high-alpha, almost to hover. I understand now how people can comment on how underpowered (or perhaps underpropped) this plane is. Of course, I added 2.7 grams in my modifications to a 30 gram airplane, about a 10% weight increase. I had to fly about 75% throttle to keep it in the air. Anyway, it flew till the wind came up, then it could not keep up with the wind. When I could feel the wind on my face, it was too strong to fly against, so I went home. It was very sensitive in roll. I had to stay constantly adjusting ailerons. No lazy watch the plane fly by itself flying with this plane in this configuration. I had hoped that the sweep I added would have tamed it down in roll some. Not that I could tell. But then again, I never flew it stock. The rudder seemed ineffective. I'll probably extend it further after today's flying. When I saw the MARS MM guys and then Jeff fly theirs, they were fast and covered a lot of territory. This configuration never went very fast, nor did it use up much airspace. I'll take it to the Family Fun Fly this afternoon and see how it does in a half-court gym. I'm pretty sure the stock Sukhoi would not fly easily in there. This one feels like it will be easy to fly in a smaller space. Jim |

Wow, Jim, it doesn't look anything like the original now!
![]() I keep hearing great things about the prop change and how much better it performs... |

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions on my delta Sukhoi mod.
I flew it some today at our Family Fun Fly. My challenge was turning it without losing too much altitude. The rudder as is just does not have much authority. Looks like I need to try some more things and work out some more details outdoors where I have more flying area and available flying altitude - when the wind is absent and when I'm not working! Jim |

I got my cg at about 30-32 mm from the leading edge, and it's much more enjoyable now. I snipped a 1g chunk of lead from a fishing weight and dropped it inside the fuse, tilted it tail-down and let it roll as far back as it would go. Then I dripped some hot glue on it to keep it in place. It's great now!!!
I agree that it could use more rudder, but I don't know if I'd call it ineffective. I was able to do a flat turn pretty easily, but knife edge flight is a little much. I need to move the pushrod to the inner hole and reevaluate. With a little work, what started off as a disappointment has turned into a nice plane! |
