I was so blown away by these builds, decided I would try one as well... but easier.
Here is a source for Valkyrie short kits.
Apologies if this has been posted in the prior 42 pages :-)))

I have one of Dan Walton's Valkyrie kits and the parts look great. The plans are not old copies. They are newly drawn and excellent. I have a 10 foot Mercury to finish before I can start the Valkyrie and am chomping at the bit.

By the way, I am not related to Dan - just have the same last name.

I have that kit now and am still in the building stage. I have the wing almost finished and the stab is finished. I haven't started anything else yet do to SEFF getting in the way. It's a great kit, but it is the short kit, so you will need to buy the rest of the wood yourself. No big deal really, I just ordered it from National Balsa. That is one great kit and if you follow the plans right, you will come out with a very good plane. Franny just built one from the plans alone and she did a GREAT job on it. It will take awhile, so don't think you will get it done in a week or two. More like 4 or 5 months, but it is well worth the time when you see the final plane. The hard part is already done in the kit, so you won't have to cut all those ribs out and build them up like the plans say. It's a great plane and I say go for it, you won't be disappointed when you get done. If you have any questions, just go back and read this thread again. Most all the answers are in there.

I just saw Franny's Valkyrie. She had it on display at the local hobby shop and it looks even nicer than the photos show. A bunch us had the chance to admire this masterpiece. A few guys even tried to lick it. Looking forward to the maiden flight.....

That is too funny! I read this the morning and giggled all day. It is certainly drool worthy though. I can't wait to see the in-flight pics.

I'm another lurker on this thread, having joined only a few weeks agl. I love what Frannie has accomplished... Frannie, can you (or did you already) give a lesson on how you built those ribs? I'm wondering if you did anything to the balsa (steaming, etc) to get them all to conform to those curves without distortion?

I'd like to add my congratulations on a beautiful build.... Can't wait to see the first flight photos and vids.

Hi Bob,

The secret I found was balsa that wasn't too soft or too hard. Soft wood seems like it will bend well, but it really just breaks. The hard won't bend. Try a few hardnesses and you'll quickly figure out just what works and what doesn't. As the ribs got smaller I did wet it to help it along and you only need to wet the outer surface.

All the ribs were made over the plans after cutting out all the leading edge tabs. There are some photos towards the beginning. They are built in groups so they needed a bit of sanding and filling once they become a wing to get the tapers correct.

Thanks for the reply, Franny. I'll take a look for those other photos.

Good luck on the maiden when you get a chance to get her into the air....

Franny,
Wanted to give you a big thanks for the elevator rib drawings. We used them at the Joe Nall for the 20 ft Valkyrie and they worked great.

Thanks,

Mark
