How high have you flown....

Took my 2m electric sailplane out yesterday and a friend put his altimeter on board so we could see how high she'd go.....
first go with around a two minute motor run showed 1261 feet and the second go ( longer motor run) showed 1701 feet... I only made the two climbs as it was 8am and frosty , my eyes were watering a bit and my fingers were frozen!
id been higher in thermals but was quite surprised to find it had reached such height... id have guessed it was about 1300 feet on the second run.
The model climbs straight up with its brushless motor so getting to altitude wasnt a problem but they do get rather small at that height.
Anyone else recorded some good altitudes from their sailplanes...? oh and yes I guess size does matter, its harder to see a 2m sailplane at 1700 feet then say a 3m one...

I know some of the guys flying FPV get up to 3-4k feet, but that is different- you don't have to see the plane.

Had my Radian to 2292' agl according to my How High from Winged Shadow. Used motor up to 420'.

I've had 12' pure thermal birds high enough that they were hard to see.

No instrumentation, though.

I've had my Radian to 2469 feet (RAM3) AGL. It was had to see even with the dark red wing paint.

I used the motor to 410 ft. and hooked into a thermal that was feeding a small cloud. The cloud and thermal remained almost stationary over the field. The white of the cloud helped me see the plane by increasing contrast over blue sky. I spun down when the it started to disappear into the cloud base.

I've since been to 2000 a couple of times and 1500+ several --- sure is fun to hook into one of those hat-suckers ;o)

Yah Wylie but you had an unfair advantage of having Steve Austin as your timer/spotter The whole time he was mumbling something about rebuilding it stronger, faster.....

well this one time i had my nutball up to over 150 feet.....

157inch stretched BOT, 2747 ft with eagle tree seagull system and could still go some.
Cularis at 1700ft and about my limits.

1300+ with my 2.0 m and ZLOG, but that's pushing my comfort level. 1200 is comfy with my 2.5 m though.

Had my 2m Pulsar up to 1700 feet. Next weekend I probably had it higher, with the RAM3 on board, but got it too far down wind, when wind aloft increased, and when I went to transition to blue sky and bring it back, lost the orientation over deep forest. I did a dive, with full flap to get it lower, but still could only see a dot, with flashing wings.

Never saw it again!

After a couple of near-death experiences with a 2 m sailplane, I stopped searching for the limit of how high I could go in a thermal. And staying lower has made me a better thermaler, I think. But I did clear 2,500 feet on a few occasions.

I still occasionally let a plane climb up quite a bit, but only in a fairly gentle thermal under a fully-overcast sky.

Hey Forest and all...

I was out with my wife today as a spotter. I was just doing some trimming on my v-tail Castor 2.5 so not seeking a big "ride". Didn't bother putting my ZLOG in but got into a real boomer. The highest I've ever been with any plane and lost sight of my plane too many times. One of those hazy blue days...the worse for high altitude visibility in my experience. Sweaty palms and all. Put the spoilerons up and corkscrewed out only to get picked up again. Had some anxious moments today, but brought my plane home.

I agree with Forest...like to stay lower and really work the lift. I do think it makes me a better sailplaner as well. I put the wing on my little 1.7 m and took a nice "cool down" ride on some calmer lift.

My best is 1321' with a 2meter plane. It's mostly a test of eyesight and nerves.
