150 to 200 mph+ speed planes => Where to buy them? --- An overview

Hello!

Below listed are fast nitro powered R/C planes that are commercially available.

Each comes with a glass fibre fuselage (some are full-composites) and each is capable of at least 150 mph top speed.

This list of speed planes does not include actual Q40 or F3D pylon racers because these are covered already in other threads.

Depending on which high-performance engine you choose these planes will be REALLY fast and may be applied even for FAI F3S speed competition. In F3S usually purpose built speed ships are applied that are not available commercially...

Please note:
All listed top speed mph numbers display realistic FAI-compliant top speeds derived through the 200 m long speed trap (average of both directions to eliminate the wind factor). That means that speed results of the same plane during the same flight, being recorded with a high-quality radar gun (Stalker Pro) or by audio Doppler shift, will be higher...

If you require OPS or NOVAROSSI speed engine related info, please visit
The OPS engine thread
or
The NOVAROSSI / REX aero engines thread

Please only use bubble-free fuel tanks for speed planes (TETTRA, JETT) to ensure trouble-free engine operation:
http://www.centralhobbies.com/Fuel/fueltnk2.html
http://www.jettengineering.com/accy/tank.html

Especially for speed engines larger than 6.5 cc the application of an in-flight R/C mixture control is highly recommended, such like the Perry VP-IMC-05:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDG65&P=7
http://www.perrypumps.com/prod03.htm

In case of a non-throttle venturi speed carb a fuel shut-off device is necessary, e.g. the Perry VP-RSV-04 Remote Smoke Valve:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXDG64&P=ML
http://www.perrypumps.com/prod03.htm

As for strong and safe carbon fiber speed props (hand-laid continuous strand) suitable for the “big-block” 10 to 15 cc speed and ducted fan engines, please ask RCgroups member RocketRob for tips.

description:
The ACCENT GFK (#1505) is a true speed plane – very hard to find these days!
The refined design does allow either electro or nitro power (two different engine cowls are included). For exceptional strength this ARF is a full composite construction, reinforced with Kevlar and carbon fiber. The finish is multicoloured. Depending on the type of engine output the ACCENT's speed spectrum just begins at 160 mph. However the landing speed is tame actually.
ACCENT – the speed plane to go berserk!

kit content:
glass fuselage (kevlar/carbon fiber reinforced) with multi-coloured finish
white coloured glass engine/pipe cowl
full composite wing and stab (each carbon fiber reinforced) with multi-coloured finish
all mountings for wing and stab already built into the fuselage
wooden parts
small parts (linkages etc)

R/C: elevator, ailerons, throttle optional
wingspan: 1150 mm
length: 870 mm
motor: 3.5 to 8 cc
weight: from 1200 g

The corresponding thread:

For the ME 163 airframe a (self-) detachable dolly is mandatory.

advantages:
  • the angle of attack during rolling will be increased (AOA of 6-8 degrees does work perfectly)
  • sufficient prop clearance for the 9x10” CF prop is generated
  • better top speed
Sunshine Model Company for instance do sell an aluminium dolly (#15308) for their #16500 Me163 that potentially will also fit the #15400 kit.

ARTF Sport GRP Moulded Pylon Racer
The Graupner Speed Cat is a pylon racer of all-GRP construction. All the models components, i.e. fuselage, wing, tailplane and wheel fairings, are supplied as ready-made moulded items, painted in the mould, with a high-gloss finish. The impressive features of the Speed Cat are its beautifully harmonious lines and the distinctive apple cheeks, which give the model an interesting semi-scale appearance. The model is capable of very high airspeeds. At the same time the aerodynamic layout of the Speed Cat gives the model pleasantly stable flying characteristics, and any RC pilot with average flying skills will not find it difficult to control.

Cobra (very similar to Simprop's famous Speed Cobra speed plane)

kit # FL-1010 content:
- glassed fuselage (white) featuring smooth transitions to wing and stab
- one-piece wing (foam) featuring glass reinforced balsa sheeting
- wing prepared for Robbe Servo-Lock #2
- control surfaces already cased and sanded
- leading edges and tips of wing and stab are already sanded
- epoxy-glued wing + stab, ready for the finish
- balsa sheeted horizontal stab (foam) – already sanded

The construction manual for the Cobra short kit.

specifications:
R/C: elevator, ailerons, throttle optional
wingspan: 1220 mm
length: 1280 mm
weight: 2500 to 3000 g
motor: 13 - 20 ccm FIRE or RIRE speed / ducted fan engine
kit price: 209.95 €

engine/pipe/prop recommendations:

description:
The COBRA is the standard beginner speed plane over here in Europe for people loving hot 13 to 15 cc rear exhaust engines. Because the fuse is very spacious, it is easy to install a large tank. However it comes with a quite fat wing and tail airfoil making a powerful 10 cc FIRE or RIRE engine (OPS, ROSSI, PICCO, JETT) already too weak for reasonable top speed...

Only with a strong 13 cc or larger ducted fan engine such like

- OS .91 VR-DF
- OPS .80 and .90 and 1.20 DF
- ROSSI R90 DF or larger
- PICCO P90 DF
- K&B .82 DF or larger
- ANGSTREM 91 DF
- Nelson/BVM .91R

the Cobra airframe can be brought to true 190 mph. The best propeller that is able to handle that relative high amount of drag is the APC 10x10“ prop, cut down to 9“ diameter. As you can imagine more prop pitch leads to lower terminal speeds of the Cobra. Same applies to smaller and larger prop diameter than 9“ in this special case.

Attention:
It it very dangerous to apply the regular grey plastic APC 10x10 prop with these ducted fan engines. Many of these 10x10 standard APC props failed already on the ground during test runs! – Fortunately nobody has been hurt so far.

For safety reasons over here people therefore make hand laid continuous strand carbon fiber copies of that standard plastic APC 10x10 sport prop (pics below). These 9x10 CF "APC" props are widely used by the Speedcobra pilots. RCGroups member RocketRob for instance does make 9x10 CF props...

The setup of the green/black Cobra is:
  • OS .91 VR-DF
  • BVM tuned pipe (custom made "fuse-top" style header that can also be ordered from MACS Producs http://www.macspro.com/headers_rear.asp ; tuned pipe length is about 30 cm between glow plug and middle of the pipe belly)
  • fuel: 20% oil, 15% nitro
  • above mentioned 9x10" CF propeller
  • BVM R/C in-flight mixture control

Cobra video (OS .91 VR-DF + Angstrem muffled tuned pipe + 10x10" APC carbon copy:
Cobra von Fliegerland (1 min 10 sec)

To conclude:
Over here in Europe this plane is very famous especially for the speed beginners preferring the “big block“ 13 cc to 20 cc ducted fan engines. Due to its size and harmless flying characteristics it is an ideal speed trainer. This plane is hard to stall during landing – very low speed touch downs are possible. But the stock Cobra cannot break 200 mph, as proven during past EURO Speed-Cups. Nowadays you will hardly find Cobras used for F3S Speed Cup competition. Other special speed plane designs (purpose built) are considerably faster - with the same engine and a speed prop sized smaller and pitched more aggressively.

Zoomer

The Zoomer is sort of a cross-breed between a Q-500 and a Formula 1. Designed for an event called "Animal 500", this no-hold barred speed design is incredibly popular with sport flyers and speed fanatics alike. It is fully aerobatic, very smooth and precise, and it slows down nicely for a gentle, smooth landing. The Zoomer is available with your choice of wing! The tapered wing is designed for high speeds and racing. Also available with our 12% thick semi-symmetrical and 15% thick full-symmetrical Sport wings - constant chord - for improved slow speed and better aerobatic capabilities. The semi-kit features a high quality, light weight epoxy-glass fuselage, along with precision cut wing cores. If you're looking to go fast or fly an aerobatic sport plane that really grooves, then this kit is for you.

This aircraft is NOT legal under AMA 428, 424 and most other Q-500 competition rules

specifications:
R/C: elevator, ailerons, rudder, throttle optional
wingspan: 50 inches
wing area: 500 sq in
motor: 6.5 to 8 cc (or a hot .60 in a .40 case)
weight: 4.5 lbs

basic kit contents:
epoxy-glass fuselage, foam wing cores, and plans
kit price: $95.00 (for each wing version: tapered 12% - race; 12% - semi sym or 15% - full sym)
