I finished putting the F-4 together this and last weekend and I have had a chance to weigh it. It weighs in at 5 lbs. 14 oz. RTF.

This is about the same weight as the F-22. There's a lot more junk in this model. There's ailerons (2 servos), retracts and a working rudder, not to mention the magnetically attached fan and tail cone hatches. It also has a two-wheel nose strut and a (heavy) GI Joe pilot bust.

So, the final specs are:

Wing Area: 383 sq. in. (2.65 sq. ft.)
Weight: 94 oz.
Wing Loading: 35 oz./sq. ft.

The wing loading is a little higher than I usually like to have, but it's not unacceptable given the size of the model.

Next up is to fine-tune the controls, and balance the model so I can establish the battery location. Once that is done, I'll be able to measure static thrust and efflux. I should be able to get these tasks done this week so I can take it out to the flying field next weekend for some real beauty shots and taxi tests.

That's not bad. I think it will still fly without problems. I will be interested in seeing what the final thrust/efflux numbers are. And of course, the pretty pictures.

I was able to make it out to the flying field this weekend to take some beauty shots and to do some taxi tests.

I checked the efflux and static thrust before taking it to the flying field. I think I'll need to make a new tail pipe because this one is wanting to inflate inside the fuselage which is causing it to wrinkle up a little bit where it exits the nozzle. I'm not sure what effect it's having on the efflux and static thrust. I'll know more once I make a new one and install it this week.

Static thrust is 2 lbs. 9 oz. and the efflux is ~110mph. The model accelerated well and I think it would fly even with the slightly wrinkled tailpipe. I would feel better if it didn't wrinkle, so that's why I want to make a new tailpipe out of thicker plastic.

Anyway, here's the shots I got.

you need to replace that hoaye blade with a midi blade. with those numbers, its barely gonig to fly.

Looks great, Dan! Very pretty sitting on the tarmac. You should be very proud of yourself. I can't wait to build mine!

Corsair Nut: According to your estimates, my 11 lb. Beluga with 4 lbs. of thrust would barely fly too, but it was actually quite fast.

well thats great if your flying around in the pattern the whole time, but this is a fighter, they do more than fly in circles, im sure it will fly, but not like a real blue angel F-4, atleast until it gets a little more power. ive flown a few jets at these kind of power levels(thrust to weight ratio) and it may fly, just wont be exiting is all. 110mph eflux is only going to fly around 70mph

As they say, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting...

You have to remember that because of the steep pitch, the FlyFly fan is currently partially stalled when sitting still. As it gets going faster, there will not be as much of a drop-off in speed as with the flatter pitch found on the Midi rotor.

I'm also not sure how much power is being robbed by the ballooning of the tailpipe inside the fuselage. I'll test it again once I make a new tailpipe.

It's currently pulling about 41A/930w static.
