Chilton DW1

Hi all, it's time for me to go bash some balsa, it's very wintery down here in New Zealand. Frosty mornings and snow down to 1000 feet so my building den is a great place to hibinate.
I need a model suitable for our 1/2A Texaco scale class. If I could find a plan that is pre Jan 1 1950 then it would qualify for normal 1/2A Tex too. I figured if I szed to a little over 300 square inches then it could also adapt to our new Electric Tex draft rules. 3 in 1 has to be good.
So what to build.... well a while back I went looking and freinds sent me a bunch of Aeromodeller 1940's scale power plans. Of these the Chipmonk and the Chilton looked great. I have a real softspot for prewar racers so it had to be the Chilton. I went looking on the Web and found a wonderful site about the four DW1s the company built. Very inspiring. http://www.chilton-aircraft.co.uk/newlybuilt.html .
I set to with the photo copier and now have plans at 46.75 inch span and 304 sq inches of wing. I need to build it down to 17 ozs to hit the minimum wing loading. Could be challenging but I estimate it is where I need to be to do 8 minutes with the regulation Cox BabeBee up front.
Progress photos soon.

David Boddington did a Dart Kitten for Texaco at a span of 45.5in span and a weight of 19oz for Texaco back in RCSQ in 1993 so your figures look pretty good as Dave Larkin (the builder?) thought he could do the Dart Kitten at about 17oz.

Not a vintage design, and certainly a bit over the 17 oz, but maybe still of interest.
Here's my DW 1 built aboiut 20 years ago and still flying now.
From the Dennis Tapsfield plan it's half way between 1/4 and 1/3 scale at 84".
Rather simplified and some of the turtledeck shapes are wrong, but flies beautifully on an old pre-surpass OS 120.
Needed a 1 kg of lead in the nose to balance (those full length ply doublers!) but still just squeezed under the 7 kg limit.

Despite the weight, glides really well as proven on the occasion my throttle servo arm fell off - took ages to run out the tank at full throttle- followed by a LONG glide back home safely (even needed the flaps to slow down for the landing).

At least it's not buffeted about in a breeze!

Good project. The old Ford engine may be a bit of a lump but as a flying machine the DW1 always had a superb reputation for overall handling and the performance it achieved from that limited power unit. I'd love to try one with a Walter Mikron III in it, though as with a lot of pre-war light aeroplanes I doubt I would fit in the cockpit.

Progress

Lovely model Warren and it is nice to know the design handles and glides well.
Good news on the build weight too Snorks. My building seems to be getting rougher and heavier as I get older (a bit like me!) but I'm hopefull of making the 17 ozs. The parts built to date weigh really light but it is early days.

Does anyone have a recommendation for light 2.5 inch commercial wheels?
I can always make some I guess but I would like a soft tire.

Attached is the last weeks worth of progress. I've departed just a little on the structure. I have to maintain all outlines, areas. moments and angles and surface sections.

Thanks for the interest.

Progress

Time for an up date. Its been a busy week but I have carried on with the tail end on the odd evening. The Tailplane is secured with two tiny nylon screws as I want to be able to adjust the incidence if needed. The fin and rudder peg in at the front and are screwed down by another nylon screw up from the bottom. I tap threads in little bits of circuit board and glue them in as fixed nuts.
The rear deck came out OK I guess. All just held in place then CAed. I lost count of how many times I glued myself to the model!
The fairing for the fin is solid block shaped up the relieved to clear the T/P then 3/16 is sliced out of the middle for the fin. Work out OK.
Next I need to work forwards, foward deck will be removeable to get at the gear without taking the wing off. In fact I think the wing center section will be glued to the fuse like the original. This will be stronger than having it removeable. The tips will plug in.
Thanks for the interst.
