Mega 16/15/4 W/ 2.5:1 and 10-8 prop on a Wattage Extra 330L

Worked great, thanks to all who helped me on this road to this result. Vert. in the first part of the flight is stunning and it will climb straight up just as fast as it flys forward. The power remains good as the pack wears on but not as hot on verticle. Still it is fast and aerobatic for a good 8 min. and it had more left when I landed each time. I am guessing about 10 min or so is a fair time to claim at least. The combo I am using is:

Mega 16/15/4t
MPI 2.5:1 gearbox
10X8e prop
1700Aup at 8 cells

Glad to hear that it works well for you. If your pack is new , give it a few cycle and the performance will increase.

Yeah, I am running two new 1700 AUPs that I got from eflight packs, fortunatly although I am new to brushless I am a long time brushed flyer.

This brushelss is everything that it is made out to be. This plane has so much power at launch that it will cross half the field before you get the TX in your hands and then it will climb straight up and get small fast. I could not be more pleased than that.

The only problem I am having is the landings. Due to the high wing loading it lands fast and heavy. Each landing on the grass field I fly on has produced a flip over. The first two were damage free and the second one broke the wing mount plate which is a 5 min fix. The grass just grabs and flips it. I have a few speed 400 planes that were lighter and easy to land without a gear. Wonder if I should just remove the landing gear and belly land? I am just not sure it would work at the higher wing loading and such.

Impreza,

I have the Wattage CAP 232 which is similar to Extra 330L. I also use the 4t mega motor, with 2:1 gb and 10x7 prop. 10x1700 batt.

I had to bend the wires of the landing gear so that the wheels are ahead of the le of the wing. Now the plane does not flip over. Also, take off is nicer. BTW, I also took off the wheel pants and replaced the original wheels with 2" wheels

This plane is awesome. I love the combination.

have fun

Wieght of these planes?

I've got a Giles from Wattage, but have been struggling with a choice for the motor. How much do your planes weigh using the 1700 batteries? How noisy is the MPI gearbox setup? Thanks for the help.

With the wheel pants and the little wheels, it just isn't going to be happy on grass at all.

I would take the wheels off, but the extra is going to look funny that way. Even 2 inch wheels need awfull shortgrass.

Clay,

I dont know the weight with the 1700's. Did'nt weigh it, just flew it.

The motor I use is the Mega 16/15/4 with 2:1 GB. Its not an MPjet gb. Mega has its own GB. Costs $36. You can get it from megamotorusa.com or nesail.com or from whereever they sell the motor.

The 1700aup weighs in at somthing just over 10oz for 8 cells. It was tough to swallow given that the other packs I looked at were 6~7oz. But the 1700s handled the current, had the capacity, and fit in the airframe.

Great point on getting the wheels ahead of the normal position. That plus taller wheels will happen tommorow!

The gearbox I have is the open one with the aluminum frame and the big steel gear. The pinion is brass and must be drilled out. I roughed up the shaft and pinion hole then used thread repair compound to help secure it, no problems so far. The gearbox is "noisy" in the sense it has a wicked whine that I enjoy. It does not clatter or grind though.

If this plane takes a dirt nap I will be getting the Wattage Cap232 for this system. I like the Extra but in hindsight the extra wing area on the 232 would have been nice.
