Dreamcatcher, I use regular letter paper in my printer. I can get the larger copys printed and my local Staples if you dont already have it tiled ...

I'm happy to share my work with other modelers if they are interested in it and i share it with pleasure (as you can see here : i haven't planed to share the plan of this aircraft but as People asked for them i have completed them to be as understandable as possible and they are now downloadable).

It's unfortunate that some unethical people try to exploit the generosity of those who freely share their intellectual property. It's just a fact of life, it seems.

New edit :

Different Center of gravity locations have been tested.
It seems that the best COG location for 3D flights is 8cm from the leading edge measured from the fuselage/wing junction area.

At this point, the aircraft is a bit tail heavy balanced but still fly safely

Very nice job, Pascal.
Any chance of getting some video of it in flight.
What's your thoughts on it's 3D capability?

Kudos,
Lance

Hi Lance,

Thank you.

Yes, a video is schedulled.

Yesterday, the bird entered the "painting workshop" and the first coat of primer is drying. I think the painting job will start on next week-end.

We will take a video as soon as the Red Bull paint scheme will be achieved.

About Funtana's flight capabilities :

The plane weights something like 550-600 grammes (i.e. 19.4 to 21.3 Oz) ready to fly.

Using 3S lipo, the Brushless outrunner i recommand is able to deliver 1Kg thrust (35.3 Oz) with a 10x4.7 propeller and even up to 1.2Kg (42.33 Oz) with a 11x5.5 so.... the weight/thrust ratio can be near 2 so... you have plenty of power => no problem at all for "nose up" actions !

Full throttle, the aircraft is really hanged to his propeller. For exemple : you can "take off" just by releasing the aircraft, full throttle, and nose pointing towards the skies. Doing this, the aircraft climb as a rocket !

The elevator and ailerons are very efficient.
The roll rate can be very fast (the aircraft is able to roll something like 540°/second if you want).

During a torque roll, ailerons allows the aircraft to "roll right hand side" without any problem.

The first rudder of the prototype was enough efficient for standard aerobatic flights but it seems it might be a bit to small to perform a comfortable "3D" control (i.e. The vertical position when Torque rolling the aircraft needed large rudder movements.)

That's why i added a bigger rudder on the plan (the rudder area have been 20% increased). The Prototype have been fitted with this new rudder but have not been flight tested at this time - we stoped to fly her to beggin the painting job

Most of the flights have been done between 1/3 and 1/2 power so the lipo and brushless don't warm.

The wing loading is rather low (30g/dm²) so the Funtana feels at ease at low speed. That's great for easy landings too.

I'm not a "3D" competitor but this is all the maneuvers we flight tested with the funtana :

Inverted flight : no problem
Looping : no problem
inverted loop : no problem
Hammer head : No problem
Square loop : No problem
Himmelman / split S / Cuban eight / humpty bump : no problem
Torque Roll : no problem (we just thought it needed too large rudder movement => a bigger rudder have been designed)
Rolling turn : no problem
Slow roll : no problem
Snap roll : The plane's speed decrease very fast. Unable to perform 2 snap rolls one after the other
High alpha flight: no problem
Knife edge : no problem

I hope to have been able to help you.

Are the Planes of Fames Museum's flying jewels and the Fighter rebuilders association still in chino airport ?

Best regards

Pascal

I have made a ribs and skin wing for the Funtana in SketchUP.

Pascal: Is it OK to post the wing plans? I'll remove them otherwise.

No Problem Kalleman, i agree

I don't know Sketchup (i use the free version of TurboCad).

I think a .pdf file shall facilitate the life of the other builders - i think a .pdf file is more common than a .skp

My two cents...

I'll looking for a Sketchup software (if it's a freeware) or a .skp browser to be able to study your plan !

Cheers !

Pascal

Sketchup is a nice free 3D program provided by Google.

There are quite some threads here on RCGroups where people use sketchup for modeling RC-planes.

Here is an A0 pdf of the wing design. I haven't got ScaleAndTile installed on this computer so I can't provide any tiled plans now. Mabye in a week when I get back from vacation.

Thanks soo much, Pascal.

Very good description. Does it all, I like that.

Be Cool to see the video and the Red Bull scheme sounds nice.

Thanks, kalleman. I was thinking to do a built up wing.

The Planes of Fame are still here in Chino. I'm pretty sure the FRA is still there too. The annual shows are fun. Amazing seeing an F16 doing a high alpha knife edge pass in front of the crowd .
