I copied the following from the H9 website,

"F4U-1D Corsair 50 ARF, .46-.55
by Hangar 9 (HAN2590)

2-stroke .46-.55, 4-stroke .72 - .82, FG-14B 4-stroke gas"

Now what I'm understanding from this,
the FG14B has equivalent power to a 2 stroke .46-.55, 4-stroke .72- .82 glow
If that's true, doesn't that open up my choices for my FG14B?

Mr. SrTelemaster

I am becoming very upset with you......

All your talk of spark ignition and converting you glow engines to spark is making me thinking of spend my hard earned money on a spark set up for my Saito 1.20. I've been following your threads and comments with great interest. I always thought glow to spark was "magic, smoke and mirrors". It's not!

My Saito 1.20 will be going in a Carl Goldberg Pitts S12 (monster Pitts) once it is rebuilt. I thought the engine on spark will give it just the kick it needs to be a real good combination.

I'm not sure if I should thank you or not

Seriously, thank you for all your work and posting your findings, tips and tricks to help out all us spark newbies.

Ken

Your FG14 (gas version of the FA82) will have about 15% LESS power than the FA82. There is less power to be had from gasoline @ the A/F ratios of gas compared to methanol/nitro A/F ratios (you can simply burn more methanol/nitro).

A simplistic eqausion would be to reduce displacement by 15% to estimate the power of the FG14 compared to a glow 4-stroke.

.82 X .85 = .70.

Your FG82 is going to be marginal in power.

IF you do everthing you can to build light by reducing tail weight, lightwieght servos/receiver battery packs & moving as much as you can to the nose like battery packs, (you don;t want the ignition/Rx pack right next to each other, place the ignition module & battery pack on the back of the firewall.) you might end up W/enough power for scale like flight. It won't be a powerhouse.

If it were me, I would invest in a glow carb & manifold & run 0% or15% nitro glow fuel on the spark ignition W/the timing cranked to 35 BTDC.

You'll have all of the advantages of gas except the cheap fuel & it will make as much power on the cheaper 0% nitro fuel as the glow version on 15% nitro while getting about double the fuel economy.

If you want a bit more power use 15% nitro & make 6% more power than the glow version (about = to a 91 4s) while getting 25% longer flights on a tank of glow fuel.

CDI/Methanol engines are the BEST way to make the most HP to weight.

Here's all you'll need besides a battery pack & switch/charging harness.

Give Adrian a call. You'll most likely get his voicemail but you'll get a call back shortly.

Even a 1st timer can have 1 of these conversions up & running in an hour or so.

SrTelemaster,
Thanks for your post, very informative.
You have a wealth of experience, and I appreciate all your advise!
On another note, I'm trying to get one of the discontinued Hangar 9 P-40B Warhawk 50 ARF (HAN2595) for $99, I think I can live with that.

I've got 3 satio's a 120, 150, and a 180. All 3 have had the motor sizes gone. Just standard 4 stroke satio's and are about 5-6 years old. They all have good compression and ran great. I got them from a friend who passed away. My question is this, what's the best was to mark which size all 3 models are? Thanks for the help

W/the BIG airscoop under the chin, the P-40 will have just a bit more room in the nose than a similar sized Sptifire.

If it's similar in size to the 50 sized spitfire & (probably) a bit lighter W/balsa construction, it sould be an excellent choice.

I like the electric retracts in the video.

$99 for an ARF warbird from a reputable name like Hanger 9 is steal.

I odered this yesterday.

I'm retired, I don't drink, chase women or do other things that cost me $$$$ so this is what I do.

I'm knda in "bucket list" territory anyway so I want to go big.

My 1st plane was a 95" WS Sr Telemaster W/a Saito FA150, so I'm used to big birds. they're actually more docile than the little ones if you have the room to manuever.

Good luck W/your AVG P-40 project.
