Cool
Guardian (3D 1500mm wingspan) Home design

Hello everyone, here you can see this airplane I designed myself; it's a balsa wood model, 1500mm wingspan and 2.5Kg weight.

I first posted this thread in the 3D flying forum but maybe here's a better place to show up my work.

Everything started as a school work of research, and I thought that it was a great idea to focus it on something that I love (The planes) so mine was about how to design a plane, able to fly fine without having a degree of aeronautical engineering.

I looked for the most important matters to consider when designing an airplane on internet and some R/C magazines so as to be able to draw the plans, and after that I also had to learn how to build balsa models (I had only built foam planes until now!).

If someone is interested I can post the plans but they have lots of mistakes which should be solved such as pieces that doesn't match and things like that.

Here you can see a video of the maiden flight:

The decoration ain't finished yet as you can see...

It's been hard but I'm quite satisfied, the model flies better than I expected, it's powered by a 5S 4400mAh Li-Po Battery, and uses a 13x7 propeller.

If you have any questions, don't doubt to ask me!!

Best regards for everyone.

SU that is a very fine example of a properly designed & built plane. I was very impressed. That thing looks better than the ones you'll see for sale at the LHS. What us the canopy made out of?
Great design,
Great covering job (that purple is awesome! )
Great flying,
Great plane,

Bravo

I'm glad you liked it!

The canopy is made of two joined pieces of extra big foam (Porexpan), then cut and rubbed to get the shape I wanted.

After all I smoothed it with sand paper and covered it with light putty.

The inside space has been emptied and the whole piece is attached to the main body using 4 Multiplex pins (The ones used for the Acromaster).

Best regards and best flights!

I'm used to build foam planes but this was my first balsa wood model.

She has lots of mistakes but love her anyway.

I was absolutely frightened at the maiden, just didn't know what would happen! LOL

I know, the look on yer face when you brought her in for a successful landing was hilarious! That was great. It was obvious how happy you were to get in that successful maiden.
Good stuff man.

Hehe, that's right, now I'm waiting to install a new speed controller, the first I used (a Kontronik Jazz 55-6-18) could not supply enough power and sometimes cut the motor down, making me sweat like never before...

Unfortunately I've had to mend a few broken pieces of wood after some bad landings, but I have already acquired a new one from Himodel, that I hope will let me push the motor to the top of its capacity.

Congratulations on your project! I recently did a school project myself this past year. I designed, and built a pattern plane from scratch. I have a thread over on RC Universe here:Link

Thanks! Yes I have a video from the 2nd flight but the quality of the video is so bad that it's hard to even see the plane. Here it is anyways: Video

Hope you enjoy it!

PS: Slider, are you sure you want to build one like this?
It really honours me, so thanks!

But just make sure you really want to, because it's months and months of hard work and the original plans have lots of mistakes and problems to solve, I just warn you...

Here are the plans, but they are in a specific format (.TIF) so that can be read and print by a huge scale printer in a "printing store" (Sorry I don't know the word in english, that place where you can print in big scale...).
