LCD Backlight for Spektrum DX6i/DX7/JR XP9303 - Low Power Design

This is what I have been developing and it turns out great. Here are some exaple of on/off stages for the DX7 backlight.

DX7 version power consumption is very little, 29mah for white and 35mah for blue-green. With such low power drawn, the light can be on all the time and you will hardly notice any difference in power drawn. The light wired directly to the main switch so it'll look complete stock once installed.

Updated 07/09/09: Added JR XP9303 mod I have just done for a local friend. JR XP9303 will draw about 38mAh, still very low to have it stay on all the time. If you're using stock Spektrum 1500mAh NiMH pack, I highly recommend upgrade to the 2600mah Lipo pack you will be amaze how long it'll last backlight or no backlight.

Updated 08/11/09: Added DX6i mod. If you're using stock Spektrum 1500mAh NiMH pack, ditch them and buy some Sanyo Eneloop 2000mAh batteries, these are hybrid NiMH-Alkaline like they drain very slowly like Lipo and has ton of juice.

I'm now working on surface radios starting DX2.0 and then DX3S/DX3R. More to come...

I can mustom made it with "any" amp drawn. Lower amp, lower brightness (just enough to see in low light condition) or higher amp higher brightness (make it easier to see in bright light condition).

Im currently working on a DX2.0, DX6i, and JR 9303 and more radio if I can get my hand on them.
How much $ ?

Are you using EL panels or LED panels? I am very interested in trying out some LED panels as I find the EL panel is not bright enough in daylight. If you are using EL panels do you have an adjustable inverter.

Thanks,

Dave

I use EL panel, this mod is intended to help you see in "low light" condition for night flying, not in daylight condition. I took those pictures in a room with 4 bright daylight flourescent bulbs and it is still bright enough to see. If the backlight is too bright, the text will actually become harder to see, and the noises from inverter is louder and will draw more power. This is the best result I have come to after many tests, brightness is just enough to see and law very little power.

Im currently working on a few local friends radios including a DX6i and JR 9303. I will be posting more pictures when im done with them.

I actually need to find out how many people are interest in this mod, then I will be able to offer a DIY kit w/full instruction. The parts needed have to be purchased in bulk in order to keep the price reasonable. If you need one right now, please PM me I'll see what I can do.

Thanks. What is even better if you use the 2600mah Lipo Pack, it lasts like forever. NiMH pack always drain faster than Lipo by itself even when not in use, no NiMH pack can outlast Lipo. Got your PM and replied as well. Hope I get some feedbacks on these soon. All my local friends love this once I installed for them, one of them keep turning the switch on/off just to see the light...lol
