Gunfighter! - The official Parkzone P-51 Mustang BL thread

Airframe Bulletin #001

There are reports of elevator hinges on the PZ P-51 BL failing catastrophically in flight. Hinges should be inspected before each flight, however it is unclear if impending failure will be obvious. Recommend an application of hinge tape to the elevator to prevent failure.

I am going to go ahead and jump the gun just a tad and start this thread up. Why? Because I have been pretty dang stoked about this plane since I heard about it from a Horizon phone rep that slipped up and told me what the new plane was going to be a couple months before the official announcement.

I will have one as quickly as humanly possible while trying to steer my business to my local hobby shop.

So, here we go! Post your stories of airborne glory or mud-bound misery. Post your tips, mods, pictures, comments and questions.

Remember, the "firsts" will have special bragging rights - first pictures, first video, first smash-up, first killer mod, first re-paint....

Hey guys,

We flew the P-51 mustang with an E-Flite power 10, 30 Amp esc, T-28 prop and a 2200mAh 3s Thunder Power battery. Speeds were 97mph in a 45-50 degree dive. The plane still handled great and would not tip stall power off with full up elevator. Landing speeds were a little bit higher but still very predictable. Vertical performance was great. Maybe 3-4mph faster than the F4U (with same setup) in level flight and it would pull away from the F4U easily while going vertical.

While this is NOT a recommended setup (will void warranty)!! We knew that you guys would be pushing the speed on this plane and wanted to test to make sure there would not be any issues.

All - am a newbie on the boards, but have enjoyed my Corsair tremendously. I've frequently been flying it early in the morning on the beach in Swampscott, MA, and having a wonderful time flying low and fast over the ocean and the beach. So, Matt, I'm naturally very excited about the P-51. The question I have is whether the plane has actually begun to ship yet; I've been checking the Horizon site daily and am dying to purchase the plane! Many thanks, Jon

Started shipping to hobby stores Wednesday this week.

Should be on the shelves by today or early next week.

Thanks, Matt - wonderful news. BTW, I'm going to maiden my E-flite Beaver on floats this weekend in NH, as well. Looks to be a wonderful weekend!

Matt - sounds like that was a rough day at the office. Feel bad for ya.

My LHS says mine will be in Monday. But Monday I have a lawyers meeting at 3:30 (divorce is moving along. Yay!), then a parents meeting for Boy Scouts at 7. I'm not sure if I'll have time to fly it in between.

Bwahahahaha!!!! Of course I will!

One of my LHS's had them in stock. I suspect the other does but as they're running a 20% off any one item in the store through the weekend I imagine they're safely hidden in the stock room so that they don't sell these out at a loss. /rant

So I picked one up at lunch and will very likely modify it with a Power 10 clone. Anyone know what size prop the T-28 prop referenced in Mattfly's post is? I'm certain that I have a Turnigy 35-36B or C in a parts box at home... Not sure I have the right prop though

9.5 x 7.5 = Stock. Might want to try a 10x7.

Make sure you upgrade the ESC to at least the stock T-28 / Corsair size. If not a 40amp

Thanks for the info. Cool - I have a 40A ESC laying around as well as a couple of 9x7.5 and 10x7 APC props! Now the only question is whether to fly before I mod

I recommend you at least try it before you mod it, it might just surprise you. It still has unlimited verticle with a fresh pack and flies very well in stock form. Then I am sure guys will push the limits on what it can do, but fly it stock at least once.

Alright Matt, I'll take your advice and fly before I upgrade heck, I may just decide it's not worth the trouble... The plane should be just about the perfect size for the mock dogfights we have at the field on Tuesday nights and the Allies needed another P-51 to deal with the growing swarm of FW-190's!

Just got back from the LHS where they had 2 of these planes. Looks really nice up close. Tons of room in the radio section. They had already converted one to a rudder and looked easy enough. I almost walked out with the bind n fly but my wife would have just killed me. Looks like a great upgrade to one of my favorite planes to fly.

flies real well. its so unbelievably light compared to the modded corsair. dang nosecone broke 00.43 seconds into the first flight.

2200mah fit after i cut out back of the battery, not the forward firewall, i wanted to keep the cog close to factory. 12min flight times on 2200 @ 75% wot.

it is surprisingly insensitive to wind, considering how light it is. slow speed handling is gravy and it seemed neutral and composed right up to stall. landing is as easy as chopping power and putting it exactly where you want it. imo, it just fine stock.

im happy

vids
dont let my lack of skill, dissuade you from purchasing this baby. this plane is really agile, snappy and a blast to fly. one doesnt miss a rudder till one doesnt have one, but in all honesty, once its on, ill forget i have it. :/

this vid kinda blows, but its a camera trying to act like a camcorder, not an actual video cam.

edit: ok, rudder installed, corsair prop and esc installed, batteries charging.

Matt... I don't doubt that you were getting this reading but I just checked out the kv rating on the Power 10 and I think your gun might beed to be calibrated.

9.5x7.5 prop, 11.1v, 1100kv motor

12,210 RPM...this puts the maximum pitch speed at 86.72mph..

Did I run those numbers correctly??
