The + sign in boolean algebra is called Logical OR.
say 1 = 5 volts, 0 = 0 volts.
A two wire electronic OR gate with a 1+0 = 1, 0+1 = 1, 0+0 = 0

The 0+0 = 1 is an inverted input OR gate in which the output = 1 when either input is 0.

a while back, my algebra professor wrote on blackboard 2+2=X
students were asked to complete the equation.
All of them who answered "X=4", some 10%, failed.
catch was in the sign +.
It is a matter of agreement that we use sign + for addition but that sign can represent any operation conceivable. It can represent division for instance and then the right answer would be X=1.
While looking at modern algebra books, my kids study from, I can only cry and sob.
And give them my old books.

Every generation, the kids get smarter. 30 years ago you could keep one happy for days or weeks on a 50 cent yoyo. Not so now, how much is that gamebox and games ?

Actually the correct way to write the NOR equation is !(0+0)=1......the "!" meaning NOT or INVERSE. Then there is exclusive OR/NOR, conjunction/disjunction, etc. ......http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boolean_algebra

Dry reading, but you'd be amazed by how useful it is........I can be 100% sure that whereever you are, reading this, there is something using it within arms length of you.......

After working thousands of gates, we knew the shorthand version. Ahhhh I remember that first mainframe job, crunching through 10 flipflops gated with 5 or 10 gates on each flipflop leg of the circuits. I accepted automated test equipment with full understanding. A human is not meant to do that. But I spent 2 years gate busting like that.

I was straining but able to keep up with that and 8085 machine code while working a day job on satellite navigation systems. USCLA extension classes. I rarely used it , soon after , mega memory and MIPS were suddenly common and I do think lots of people got lazy from not really needing it so badly. And then also compilers came around.
I'll bet it is mainly used by semiconductor engineers these days. Or relay engineers. And I'll bet there are boolean simplification programs available. Remember, it's intelligence is limited to that of the software engineer who wrote it.

Well I used to find jokes in this thread, but now it is full of nerdy jerks showing that they listened to the teacher rather than ogled the good sort sitting in the row in front. I guess that is itself a joke.

These days if you need something to perform a task equal to a boolean system more complex than just a few tens of gates and/or F/F's either a PAL circuit or a tiny microcontroller is usually chosen. One PAL programming software i have worked with has both an automatic simplification routine per pushbuttom, and even some degree of automatic synthezisation based on the wanted input/output relation.......

But just to do a somewhat scruffy attempt to try to get back on track:
