sounds great!
If you need a more beta testers i would be interested!

This sounds like a cool project ... is it also going support Heading Hold (HH) mode? For comparison, the X-3D-BL supports Height Hold, ACC, and HH on its 3-way switch.

The variable-pitch support has been a goal for many too ... will be following along ... keep up the great work!

Heading hold mode is a required prerequisite for GPS hold (or at least knowing your orientation is) . I should have poointed this out. In any case, yes it will have it . I am suprised to hear that no one has done variable pitch support yet. In my mind it's a very logical next step to achieve near perfect stability. With fixed pitch props there is a large delay between the time a throttle is commanded and the time the prop achieves the coorisponding speed. That and the fact that the effectiveness of any command change varies with the speed of the propeller. I.E command changes on a slower propeller are less effective than changes on a faster propeller. With variable pitch this isn't an issue. The time to achieve a change in command is just equal to the time the servo takes to move to the position. From what I have seen most servos can achieve 90 degrees of rotation in about 100ms - 300ms. Varying the speed of brushless motors over their entire range is much slower. I would estimate most brushless motors take from 500ms to 1 second to go from 0 to 100% throttle. Though speed of command response is an issue it is small in comparison to the issue with effectiveness of fixed pitch props at low speeds. In bad weather (E.g. wind >10 knots) I have seen fixed pitch props stop because the correction required to maintain a pitch attitude was greater than the propeller stopping. Obviously this leads to stability problems. The issue can be fixed by adding a payload to it, thereby increasing the average speed of each propeller, but all of these factors are eliminated 100% by using a variable pitch setup.

New Board Teaser

Hey guys, attached is another teaser for the new board. I think I'll be able to fit an accelerometer on it and thats about it. I'll probably have to create a daughter board to get the GPS hold sensor data. It'll mount above the first board on stilts. BTW the board is 2 layer I just haven't been showing the second layer because it makes the board unreabable in a jpg. What do you guys think so far?

Good price considering the gyros and barometer alone would cost you... $120 or so.

But, is that 2 PIC Propellers in there? Kinda seems like overkill for the job, unless you have some really intensive future plans. Still, very cool project!

i should clarify. this board will include several on board modules that you can purchase as upgrades. the base board will be around $200 and gets you a basic remote controlled quad with variable pitch support. i may lower the prices depending on what the parts cost. the next module is a barometer which gets you height hold. the next is an accelerometer that gets you auto leveling the next is position hold with gps, magnetometer. i haven't finalized the price structure yet. but i' looking at offering upgrades at cost. this way the level of complexity is variable and the cost is low to get started

another thimg i should clarify. i am using 2 propeller microcontrollers to ensure i can deliver all the features i promised with the v1 board. it's important to me that people who invest in this board don't get screwed by stupid mistakes like not having enough computing power to deliver all the features i promised. also that extra power only costs an additional $7 and means we have enough computing power to implement virtually any features we want. including the possibility of wayppont navigstion

It all sounds very exciting and promising - let's hope that it comes to fruition. There are many guys who have been working to produce similar machines for many years AND STILL HAVE NOT IRONED ALL THE BUGS OUT!
Good luck, anyway
Cheers Ted

Board Redesign

I redesigned the board. I am now able to get everything I need onboard except GPS which will likely still need to be mounted elsewhere. This shouldn't be a problem because the GPS I would like to use can be mounted inside of a surface. E.g. cut a hole in a canopy and it mounts through the hole. As you can see there is still some board space left for other stuff. Any more ideas before I work on finalizing this thing?

You may want to leave some board room for frame mount holes ... some existing frame makers may have specs for mounting dimensions and board size support.

Also, what about adding LED support? ... a programmable sequencer and different 5V/11V power taps for other external devices like CAMs, FETs for remote Tx control?

I'm really intrested in your great work and willing to buy one as soon as you finish.
can you tell me how much will it cost if I want it with the stability option?
and when will you finish it? because I am having a problem that I am living in Germany at the moment and in about 2 months I have to go back to my home land so I have to get everything before going back there.
