Waco Bipe

Hi All,
Just noticed that Hobby People has a new .30-size biplane ARF http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/127525.htm

Does anyone know any details about this plane? Looks like a possible candidate for 10 cells and a geared Endo or Atomic Force motor.

Fascinating you should mention this. I saw that listing the other day and thought it might be a good candidate for a 1406/2Y, Model Tech belt drive and Schulze 45Ko combo with a I have sitting somewhere in a drawer in my shop. I was going to check out the kit at Hobby People tomorrow after the morning flying session. I wonder if the cowl will be big enough to hide that bulky belt drive.

Dr. Jet,
If you do go and check this plane out, please let me know what you think (motor and battery room, etc.).

TIA.

This plane is too small for the 1406/2y combination I have. I don't think that big belt drive will fit centered in the cowl.

8 to 10 cells with a geared car motor should be a good combination. The instructions are a little vague, but anyone with a modicum of modeling experience should have no problem. The fuselage is plenty large to fit gear into. The firewall is heavier than necessary for e-power, so I would recommend some surgery here.

Well, I still have several of those silver brushless motors (with and without gearboxes) in my drawer. I did test-fly someone's Waco with the Phasor 30 motor on 10 cells (cp1300's) and it flew great. Take-off roll was about 5 feet! Landings were a non-event. A word of caution about this model. Always fly with the sun at your back. If you get this thing backlit, you will have a heck of a time guessing which way it is going. The biplane configuration and colors make it HARD TO SEE! I almost lost this guy's airplane. Fortunately, I just held the controls and let it fly into the light. Whew! I was worried for a moment!

Well I did it!!

Hi Guys,

Well I flew the Waco from Hobby people just before going to the IMS show today. Let me just say, what a great flying plane! She flew like she was on rails. I highly recommend this as an electric conversion.

Specs:

Motor: Jeti 30/3
Prop: APC 9x7
ESC: Kontronik Smile 40-6-12
Battery: Sanyo 10 cell CP1700SCR Zapped pack
Servos: Ailerons…CS 21’s, Rudder and Elevator Hitec 85BB’s
Weight: 64 oz.

I did not modify the plane in any way except the aileron control horns because the ones supplied did not work. The geometry was just plain wrong so I made my own from 1/8th 5-layer plywood. Also I had to make my own motor mount from aluminum round stock. I know it is a little heavier that the IC version but that can be made up with some CP1300SCR’s. I ran the plane for 4 minutes and I still had power on the 1700’s to go. I will check the full run time tomorrow.

I will post a few pictures here and on my web site. Also there is some flight video on my website.

Thanks
Bill

I am *green* with envy!

I looked at this a while back, but haven't yet done it. Kind of looks like a super stearman. And those pictures you posted, man, you need a way to get a smoke system in there!

Great looking plane and nice pictures, thanks for posting them.
