Hi Ed
Am getting close to a set of 1700s. You present a crushing argument in my books

Wonder how long before the CP1700 starts to follow its big brother?

Regards

"putz-e"? Hmm..... if I'm not mistaken, "putz" is yiddish for that male appendage for which Bob Dole has been shilling viagra. Can any other of youz Nu Yawkers out der confirm this?

Actually, it's taken from the Southern verb "To Putsy", as in, ambling around having fun, not doing all that much really and taking your time enjoying it.

I got that from my wife Sue, who's from NC.

Though I speak fluent English, as well as my native Yorkshire, and understand American fairly well (the old American, of course, from around 15 years ago ), Southern is still somewhat of a mystery. I have yet to find the "Dawwg" that is apparently living in our house, for example, and have been unable to learn the exact pronunciation of all the 30 or so letters in the Southern alphabet. Aproximately 24 of them do sound like our regular English alphabet, however.

Noo Yoik - isn't that a small island just off the West Irish coast?

Anyway - we all always being told this is a family affair, so let's leave Bob Dole's appendage out of it ( I understand Liz Dole once said much the same thing )

Regards

The Oxford English Dictionary (unabridged) has two entries for putz. One is a nativity scene native to Pennsylvania Dutch county. The other is as I noted about coming from Yiddish. I could imagine some of the comments if you flew it anywhere near NY. There is no entry for Putsy. I think Derek should submit this to the OED for consideration!

AFIAK, Oxford is no where near "The South", so how would the OED know about it?

Does it contain "y'all" ?

This could be like a less celebrated moment in automotive history when Rolls Royce tried to market a model of RR by the same name everywhere. I don't recall which model, but its name meant something very disagreeable in Spanish ...

What the heck. Just wait for the next design.
