That "ridge" (red arrows) looks kind of suspicious to me, what do you think?

I agree with you as I think red arrows on a black and white photo are very suspicious too. However photo shop wasnít even invented back in the 50ís so it couldnít have been used?

Kinda off topic, but does anyone remember when TV commercials were live? I remember John Cameron Swasey strapping a Timex watch (Takes a lickin'...Keeps on tickin'.) to an outboard propeller mounted to a water barrel.

They ran the engine for 15 seconds, after which he intended to prove the watch survived. However, he couldn't find it! In a classic "save", he announced..."Well, I don't know where it went, but wherever it is, you can bet it's still ticking!"

That was from a movie filmed in the Glades near where I went to drink beer every afternoon. Happened at Coon Key Pass Marina and in one shot the boat driver misjudged the bank and the boat went up into some cars and some people and one person was killed.

In the Merc picture the "ridge" is the wake from another boat out of the picture to the left. The rope is obviously drawn on the original picture and is of course way too small for such a tow anyway so thats a fake.

The Timex watch test on the outboard motor was successful but the watch did drop off the propeller that it was attached to and fell to the bottom of the glass tank where it couldn't be reached. However it was still running we found out later. I saw it happen. They did that ad several more times and the watch did stay on after the first test and it did stay running. Good watches those Timex's.Norgale

Check this out.
Vintage Timex Commercial (2 min 48 sec)

Now here is the test that went wrong.
