The Andy Harding engine is interesting. It appears the entire cylinder assembly is adjusted with the screw on the right side of the cylinder. It's not obvious which components actually move though. It looks to me like crankcase closures are loosened, compression is changed, the crankcase closures tightened, and then the engine is run. Basically the crankshaft moves along it's radius from the camshaft.

I actually fly my FS-48 diesel quite often. I added a Cline fuel regulator and its runs extremely reliably. I figure I have over 90 minutes of flight time at high throttle settings with the 14oz tank. I'm working on a new engine design to improve performance as diesel.

Oh. this thread has brought back some memories..Frog 249 BB in control liners and and prop driven cars, what a great motor . Also a Mills 1.3 in free flight planes, and an ED something or other that only featured in a hovercraft...terrible motor to start and run. I didn't realise how frictionless the hovercraft was going to be and it ran away from me down an invisible slope and smashed into a wall

I knew that there was a full-size aircraft museum at Temora in NSW, but wasn't aware they also had model engines - maybe somewhere for us Aussies to leave our engines when we depart ?

I'm pretty sure that's it's only speed. I know some people run the MVVS 10cc diesel at 4000-4500RPM for the event. The SAM guys get 28cc of fuel if they weigh 7lbs. Slightly less for every pound less. The event is duration with no engine run limit, only fuel volume. I built an FS-52 diesel that ran over 1 minute per CC for someone to use in this event. Tuning was very critical, however.

No specs, only comment was how loud the engine was!

Watching that ETA got me to wondering.

Have any of you chaps tried a diesel with a tuned pipe?

I have an MVVS .40, rear-exhaust, c/w pipe. It might make an interesting project.

Yeah, that's my video. And, yes the engine was loud. I just ran it for the sake of running it. 7x6 prop, but I don't think I remember how fast it ran maybe 15k. I wasn't trying to check performance, and I certainly wasn't trying to irritate the neighbors ant more than I already do!

I ran my MVVS 2.5DR on a tuned pipe many years ago. It leads to off pipe being under compressed if tuned for piped settings. I don't remember how much power I gained over the stock tuned muffler but there was some gain. many years later I found the engine has an egged out little end.

It was nice to see the ETA running. Mine hasn't see fuel in over 40 years, but it is still free and turns over nicely. With a 9x4 prop it had about the same power as a McCoy .19 RV racing glow when flying a small Ring Master.

I did try, once, with my ST G15RV and an ED pipe....and YES, I can confirm that this engine responded VERY well to the pipe, when the optimal pipelength/prop dimension finally was found...IIRC the prop was a Graupner 7x5.
Unfortunately I didn't own a tachometer at the time, but I recall the G15 "singing" in a real high note....

The thrill didn't last long though, as while still tweaking, the crankpin snapped,
and put an abrupt end to the music...

Luckily, back then spares were still available, so a new crankshaft solved the problem....however I've never repeated this adventure...after all I don't compete anyway, so why push your luck...?

(Fuel was "my ordinary" with 25% castor and no additives...)

As I rarely/never throw anything away , I've still got the broken bits....see photos below...

WRT tuned pipes.

I think that I'll heed your experience, chaps, and steer clear of tuned pipes.
