Annealing aluminum softens it so it doesn't crack when being worked. As you work it then the aluminum becomes work hardened. There is no limit for annealing aluminum, you can do it as many times as is needed to shape it.
Some alloys need to be annealed in a special heat treating facility and other "friendly" alloys can be heated up to near 800 degrees using torch. They would not have used the cheap alloys in the rod, unless it was a slag engine.
There are special temperature indicating crayons that you can get from welding supply stores.
I straightened out this rod for a engine myself very recently.

This is interesting...at my work I have access to a small electric kiln which could be set on any choosen temperature....
What temperature should I aim for....?....and should the piece be quenched in water, e.g. like copper...?

800 degrees Farenheit is the temperature limit. Any higher and the alloy might change its internal structure. You just let it cool down by itself. Aluminum melts at around 1100 to 1200 degrees, so one has to be careful of course.

Earl knows Marker pens vary and test strips have to be made on sheeet allum, did you use dowel pins through the ends of the rod supported on paralels during the straightening ?.

I have done that with larger rods. But with the .049 rod I straightened I did not.
I had a spare rod as well. But I didn't feel like making up a jig for the little rod to ensure it was perfectly straight and aligned.

The Mp-Jet letmo 2.5cc engine is a really sweet running engine. No nasty tendencies, it just works. We were discussing them here in this thread a while back http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10442763/tm.htm
I was running Davis Diesel fuel with some extra castor oil added to it and I used a 11x6 prop on it.

Hi,

It seems to be the head of a Webra Record 1.5 cc of the "1954-59" version.

Many, many thanks!

Here is the complete story: I recently acquired an inline twin crankshaft probably home made and this pair of heads. The crankshaft is complete, very well machined with double BB, just missing the needle AND a pair of cylinders/pistons !(pic#1)


I have noticed that the pair of heads screws perfectly on the cylinder of the glorious remains of a Taifun Hurrikan. (pic#2)

Unfortunately (for me) the upper and lower threads of the cylinder of the Hurrikan are not the same and the lower thread of the cylinder of this Hurrikan is slightly too large to screw onto the twin crankcase...

BUT the head thread of the Hurrikan screws perfectly onto the thread of the twin crankcase. (pic#3)
(I hope you follow me!)

SO if somebody owns a Webra Rekord, can unscrew the cylinder and verify that the upper and lower threads are the same, I know I will have to hunt for a pair of WEBRA REKORDS (or piston/cylinder assy!) to get a pretty" mini Taplin" !

PS: I just hope the piston rod will fit the twin crankshaft but it's another story!
