Har har, Chas, blowhards are EVERYWHERE, as we both know!

I have had the insane luck of having toured both the old PAW plant and the new one, and spoken with Gig himself both times. I watched Gig start and tune one of the prototype 60s (I was too chicken to approach the huge bat it was swinging), and met the family. I have fond memories of Gig's wife machining needle valves in one of the old shops...

John,

MP Jet are a Czechoslovakian company that mainly produce brushless motors and various electric flight accessories. They also produce a small range of diesel engines and are very much still in production. I think the Super Atom may be a brand new engine. They also produce a 0.6cc and a 2.5cc engine.

As I mentioned, the 0.6cc 040 Classic is a great little engine and very easy to start. Some people use them in place of a Mills 0.75 for Tomboys etc. The cost is also very reasonable, certainly in the UK anyway.

We have a UK dealer here, but I'm sure you could order direct from MP Jet, or email them to see it they have a North American dealer (they speak English, I've emailed them before). The site is mainly in Czechoslovakian, but here are some links to the engines:

And the price is ????? Those team race motors are big bucks . You don't see motors like that in your local hobby shop .

Mike - I presume you mean the price for the Cobra. No idea!

The MP Jets work out at around $57 US for the 0.6cc and $137 US for the 1.8cc and 2.5cc. That's just a straight conversion from the Czech price. Don't forget postage and import costs. Still good value I think.

A fun diesel or an extreme F2 diesel

Flyer and DeeBee, thanks for the MP Jet info. They’re nice looking engines made for old timers. These diesels are probably where the “most fun” is to be had without getting the jitters and all up tight on that first flight. In contrast, the F2 engine is at the other end of the spectrum, very extreme. There’s no forgiveness with these engines, but I guess we all would like to get a test drive in a new Ferrari. The Moki Cobra certainly appears extreme.

Mike, Here’s a similar F2 engine, a Profi at $900.

Well, there's nothing like asking. Or, as I was once told, if you have to ask, you can't afford it. Either way here's the price for the MOKI TR Cobra.

Now what would you rather have, a pair of new OT replicas, an EBay treasure that just might not be so great, or a racing engine to dream with. It's always nice to dream. I'm not sure what a 2.5 racing diesel would be capable of, but a .40 pylon was pulling 180 mph a few years ago. Really not for us older guys, but maybe for the young.

Merco diesel, more parts and problems

Here are a few more parts from the Merco shown on post #1475.
The piston and cylinder are good, no pitted areas.
Looking at the pitted areas on the carb makes me wonder if corrosion was starting, or just a poor casting.
If corrosion, then maybe that's what held the head bolt so tightly.
Either way, I'll never really know. What matters is that you keep your little jewels well oiled and checked.
Is this Merco a collectible? I can't see it ever being a sought after engine.
On the other hand, I remember when the old red head McCoy .35 were selling for $5.95. And these engines now sell on EBay for a lot more.

Here is one of my diesels . Any one know what it is ? I picked it up at Toledo about 20 years ago . It's a 2.5 c.c. (.15 ) size motor probably for team race or combat .

Mike, nice pictures. I like your "pet" too. Very clean.
Looks like you did well 20 yrs. ago at Toledo. That diesel still looks like a very modern racing engine. Has it been run? Is it ABC? The head is the same in appearance (no tommy bar) with probably a screw thread attached to the contra piston to move it up or down.

The 2.5 diesel is ABC as far as I can tell . The cylinder is tapered , the con rod is airfoiled and bushed both ends . and yes it is a push/pull contra piston. The engine wgt. is 4.8 oz's . There are three intake ports and one exhaust port in the cylinder .

Great pictures Mike.
Maybe not a fair comparison, but how would the ETA and the MVVS (RI,RE) compare for performance? Close, or is the newer diesel way ahead?
