We did similar- only with a second piece of laminate on the top (make a foam sandwich)
Got a piece of sample laminate from Home Depot for a cost of zero cents.
We buy the longer 8x32 bolts and just dremel the extra bits off of them and cover the hole mess up w/hot glue so you don't scratch yourself and keeps the nut from loosening up.

Esprit has the best descriptions on folding props and sizes. Please note the shoulder/yoke size of the props. Hobby King, I believe for the most part, only sells 6mm yoke/shoulders, the piece that goes into the spinner. Where as the most popular size for our application is an 8mm shoulder/yoke. You will also need to get the correct size collet/shaft for our motors. The red motor is 3mm shaft.

I'll not be flying combat either, to start off with, and wanted to know how much of a benefit the folding prop would make. I think the gliding characteristics would improve but how often do people glide on wings?

Set the brake function on the esc and call it good.
Depends on the wing. We have friends that have wings that are made so the motors are detachable and can come completely off for slope soaring with the same wing they use for combat. There are also plenty of guys here that wait for windy conditions and do power slope soaring with their combat wings. The Assassins big brother, the Grim Reaper will glide well and in recreational flying I find myself sometimes gliding long enough to forget to turn the motor back on. The additional complexity of a folding prop would probably not be what you are looking for with an Assassin. May be some pay offs for longer distances on an FPV plane or something along those lines.

If you are not worried about the glide then just use a solid prop with the prop saver, although the prop saver does not always work. Between three of us we go through a couple of props each get together.

I can't find extreme tape. Can I use duct tape or should I use 1 inch wide tape that has fiberglass running through the length of the tape?

No and No is my suggestion.
Get some online if you need to, I got some from Amazon.com no one here has it also.
For hard combat it is a deal breaker not to have the correct tape, for sport flying the 1" strapping tape could work but I would still get the extreme tape.

Lol I checked the paint section. Only masking tape and mounting tape. No one even new what i was talking about. On a positive note tho, this kit is beautiful, came well packed, I'm excited to get it going. Although my hobbyking order has been "processing" for almost a week :S .
