Build Log
House of Balsa "Grim Reaper" P51 Mustang

Im starting work on a HOB k-72 kit. Its the electric mustang with the 46.5" wing.

I have quite a few mods planned for it from flaps to retracts as well as wing mods so it actually has p51D style wing...If wanted to build an Extra 300 I would have bought that kit..I'll see what I can do about that.

Hopefully unlike so many others this one actually gets finished.

some progress

I got most of the fuse and wing completed.

The next step is to add the flaps and finish the almost complete wing fillet mod. (not shown)

Made some good progress with the over all kit construction and the mods

Next step is to build the tail and nose hatch then add retracts and servos

tail section is done.. and pinned in place. the nose hatch is also finished.

I have to order retracts and servos...might be a few days before I get to do any more work.

Wow!! That is gorgeous, Gun Jam!!

These props are getting good feedback and they're gorgeous (IMO).

As for a motor, I think an Eflite Power 10 might fit the bill.. you might be able to go cheaper but they're high quality and proven... 1100kv is usually a good target for a warbird on 3s in my experience. You probably know more about this stuff than I do...

Awesome thanks for the link...Ill have to compare those to the vario prop...at least I have some options now.

Im thinking this plane will weight about 2.5 lbs when done I would like close to 250 watts but not less so 250 to 330 is a good range...I think the power 10 may be a bit small. maybe a 15 size...still kinda depends on the prop I go with too i guess.

Thanks again

I got the tail covered while waiting for parts to arrive...

I still haven't ordered the main gear yet as robart 601 85 deg are more difficult to find than I had intended. The retract tail wheel and main wheels should be here today. I have power unit coming tomorrow...a 15 and a 25 ill see how they fit and deiced on which one I should go with. The 25 sounds good but the lighter weight of the 15 also sounds good hummm..

Yeah its the wrong tail number....maybe ill make it right someday...I figured that was close enough....for now

looking nice!!!
But I must warn you, a roll of paper won't hold those wings strongly enough

house of balsa assured me that the paper roll wing spar would indeed suffice

Got the motor installed...I went ahead and used the .25

Got the retractable tail wheel system mostly installed waiting to be glued pending installation of mains...which I am still trying to find for a decent price.

Got quite a bit of work done its almost ready for covering and test flight.

I still have to finish the bottom of the wing where the wheels will fit when retracted and thats about it.

I drove it around on the sidewalk and it has great ground handeling. That steerable tail wheel is a really nice setup.

So far things are looking good but the plane has swallowed up a few more servos than planned but reliability, simplicity, rigidity, and over all quality of component function has been greatly improved. The cost was perhaps 1.3 oz additional weight.. im using futaba s3114s and hs 55s for almost everything...There a 4 hs 81s for elevator, aileron, and 2 for the gear.
