GWS micro Mustang free flight conversion to DSM2 5 channel RC with BL upgrade

These are on sale for $20 so i got one. This thing is about the same size as a cox micro warbird @ 20'' wing span. I think this could be done as a 1 cell lipo plane.

edit..looks like is 24.5'' wing span..my bad

interesting, where did you get it?

Your plan is gut it out and put fresh up-dated gear in it?

Well, its a kit so no gutting is involved.

I have a 1 cell radio setup from a P3 Swoop that should work well in here.

I think this is a much better plane than the Cox warbird kits as this one has landing gear and battery's and motor and Gear box. The motor is setup for 3 nimh cells 3.6v so a 1 cell lipo will be perfect. Its a 130 motor same as the CWB but has a different winding (low impedance 3v). If wanting to do a 2 cell setup, just swap the motor with a 6v or 7.2 v winding. I think if Cox had added a Gear Box to their kit they would have been a much Better kit as DD motors are very inefficient.

I have not really decided which way to go with this kit but I plane on doing a light weight build of some kind. I may not even use the motor that comes with it and may go with a small BL setup.

RC Conversion in progress

Started work on this plane today..Started with H-stab. The foam on this plane has a lot of flaws and mold release marks. The molding although decent is not up to GWS standards. There was also some dents in the foam here and there and I'm sure thats why all sales are final on these planes. They are still worth $20 IMO.

Tail feathers hinged and H-V stabs installed.

Got this phase done.

edit. I had to redo the H-stabs because the wire joiner I used was too thin in diameter and caused unequal deflection So I had to rip it all out and redo it. When you see pics of the H-stabs, they will be white depron foam.

Fitting the motor and Gear box and prepping for radio control

Started by adding filter caps to the motor so I had to take the gearbox apart and thats when I discovered that the pinion was very loose on the motor shaft. I had another that fit tighter so I used that and reassembled the gear box and wired a connector to the motor and tested with a single lipo cell. Motor drew 1.5 amps which if the plane was empty like in free flight mode, that would probably be enough power. Tried it with a 2 cell lipo and got about 3 amps draw WOT. That should be plenty! So I decided to go 2 cell lipo and conventional radio gear more on that later. Installed the gearbox to the fuselage with GWS glue and went to install the cowl, thats when things got tricky as the cowl did not want to fit as there was way too much right thrust and interference with the gearbox and the cowl. So removed the gearbox and cleaned off the contact cement and added some shims and test fitted till it fit then epoxied the gearbox to the fuselage. then pressed on the cowl. This would have been more than most newb modelers could have done. Nothing on this plane fits like its supposed to Its actually fun for me to over come these problems as a modeler but I bet some people would not enjoy or expect all these misfitting parts that are poorly finished etc. Now I know why it says all sales final To me, these are just little problems to fix and no biggy and most modelers with experience will be able to work around the minor issues.
