whats the fastest 70mm edf foam jet??

i modded a hl f5e trying to get the fastest speeds out of it....
I swapped out all electronics and upgraded everything including the servos to hs 65's. The electronics are :
125 amp cc esc
1400 watt js 1400 motor
70mm wemotec fan
4500mah 30c 5s polyquest lipo
airpower 260 micro air retracts

With an mph gauge( eagletree) i was only able to hit 86 mph...
Now my question is what is holding back this jet? the weight, the foam, the airframe design itself?

Anyways, the jet is totaled after a high speed pass where one wing folded...Im now looking into a fiberglass / balsa composite jet thats more durable and faster, unless someone can point me out another foam airframe that can handle the above setup and hit 100mph or more....any suggestions appreciated.

Sapac F16 hits that speed with stock setup on 4S battery give or take wind speed and direction. The the airframe is tougher than that Starmax soft crapp foam and can be modded to fit a 6cell easy.

for the record:
The foamy Phase 3 F-16 flew at 170+mph?
Can you handle this speed?

BTW, F-5E is a draggy airframe

you answered most of your questions.....this plane is designed more towards a intermediate beginner and not designed for the high dollar parts you put in..... geez i still get upset guys you spend 3 times on more amp hungry parts on a flimsy floater airplane, Get you a airframe designed for speed ok? HET does that, you got a nice powerplant..... I got my EDO F-15 going that fast on 3s, BECAUSE its LIGHT and thats is key

Yep, the F-5E airframe is draggy. I'm going to see how my JS-1400 / Wemo setup does it in on 4S. I've contemplated even sticking the stock motor back in, but I think the extra thrust from the JS-1400 and Wemo will be worth keeping them in there. Did you have any extra reinforcements done to your wing that folded?

I'm hoping the F-16 I have from H/L will go a bit faster than the F-5E, but I think I'm going to start looking towards composite airframes to put my 70mm Storm in and run off a 5S pack. I'd like to be able to hit 100mph+, and out of the F-5E, F-4, and F-16, the F-16 is probably the only one with a shot of getting there, if any.

I've been meaning to give that Sapac F-16 another look, but I've got too many jets as it is. Holding out for new RC Lander planes!

heres a vid of the f5e modded jet ....notice the wings bending during banks and loops. I know i should have reinforced it to prevent the wing folding, but subconsciously i think i wanted to plant this thing into the ground so id have an excuse for a faster airframe! lol
edf jet modded from stock f5e (1 min 12 sec)

One in the back seat of someone's Ferrari.

Sorry, I know that was a useless answer.

I wonder why the Starmax HE162 has not been used much, by folks on the speed kick. I was amazed at the speed, considering the relatively low power in mine. Seems to be a clean airframe for speed.

Not trying to be a wiseass, but this is basically a meaningless question. Any jet with any size fan can be made to go faster with more power, less weight, better aerodynamics, better airflow in and out, etc, etc.

To go fast, get a smooth, light airframe with well designed inlet and outlet ducts, and put as many watts in it as you can fit, with battery and motor.

Notwithstanding that, in my own opinion there is such a thing as too fast. I don't like a model that is flying at 2500 scale MPH. (unless it's an SR-71). Not realistic, and can't really see it. When I was younger and full of testosterone, I felt differently.

That power set would be really nice in a HET F18. Not the fastest airframe in the world, but it would still hand launch easily and be fast enough to be fun, but still very flyable.

Or a HET F16...

I sure would like to know what fan/motor/esc/battery combo was used in that jet.

That thing is amazing.
