Large aerobatic model - Edge 540 or similar

Curious..
I have this little F27 sitting around..
I figure on 30 cells I can get over 11 lbs thrust (peak) with a 14" prop.. 30 RC cells weigh 3.75 lbs, motor/controller less than 1lb, is there a large aerobatic (ARF) model that weighs 4lbs or so dry?
Anyone else tackled a project like this?
Is it worthwhile?
Affordable?
Probably not going to jump into this for a while, but I keep thinking, I have the motor sitting there.. probably a little large for my Somethin' Extra kit..

Hi Andy,
I've been flying a Hanger 9 Edge 540 for several months now. I had to do a little extra work on the wing because of a recall that happened after I had already been flying it.
I'm using an Astro 60 (11t) with a superbox, 40 Nimh 2000mah cells. The plane weighs about 14 lbs. Performance is quite good and I'll be bringing to Mid-Am this comming weekend.
Converting it to electric was simple and it is a really nice looking plane.

What is the current on that estimated setup?

I believe the F27 is really a 1412/2Y which "only" has a current rating of 43A for more continous use. I know it is pushed much harder in gliders, but that is mostly on/off and normally with 1250 cells. When I looked at it in ecalc it seemed more like 24 cells and maybe a .60-90 aircraft type motor.

I would be interested to see if it can handle your proposed setup, it would be a very power setup.

Yes, it is CAPABLE of that kind of power but that's why I put "(peak)" in therem. I wouldn't dream of running it wide open much.
I love the way the large models just idle off the runway.. I'm wondering if that's something we could do with a large model on a power system like this.
Dave, what is/was the dry weight of the 540? At 14lbs total with your power system, looks like it's 9lbs or so? Yikes! I wonder if the Lanier kits are any better..

The E-verted H9 PT-19 written about in S&E a few months back used an 1415/3Y and 30/32 cells w/16x10 APC"E".

Also thought I read here that someone used the same set-up in an H9 Edge 540.

My current draw is only about 33 Amps intitially(2000 NiMh are happy there). I think that the weight was about 9 lbs. without the power system.

Hi Andy,

Look into the Aeroworks 1/4 scale Edge 540. I have one with a YS 140, 6 heavy Futaba digital Servos and Smoke system and it only weighs 9 pounds. I have also contemplated converting it to Electric. I think it would work very well with your system.

Regards,

Ricardo

Ricardo,

Your 9 pound weight - is that with fuel and liquid for smoke, or "dry" weight?

Thanks,

Terry

andy,

it is not too large for your something extra. i have a something extra with f-27 on 20 cells and 14 x -- prop. it flies great. (just flown at mid america) about 7.5 pounds.

do not run this motor on 30 cells and a 14 inch prop , unless in lmr, 7 seconds at most.
mine heats up plenty on 20 cells over 5 minutes.

Andy: My Goldberg Sukhoi is roughly the same size as a 1/4 Edge-72" span. At 12 1/2 lbs RTF, it flies to my satisfaction(!) with a Pro Zinger 18x10 turning about 7500 RPM. (Roughly 23 lbs thrust) If you can find the power to do this, or close to it, go for it. Otherwise, I'm afraid you'd be doing it for the sake of saying you could. E-power just might not be the best for this plane and type of flying.
BTW, mine has a Brison 2.4. Tex.

Wow Sabrejock/Tex, 2000+ watts!

The S&E PT-19 used 1000+/32 cells and Dave has over 1200.

Bring on those fuel cells; will that make us gassers again?

Terry,

The Aeroworks Edge weight is Dry, without fuel or smoke. I think it is the lightest of all these type of models.

27% Staudacher, 14.5 lbs. 78.5" wingspan, Actro 40-5 motor, Actronic 70-32 controller, 30xRC2400 zapped cells, 18x10 APC-E prop, 60 amps off of Fresh charge. I'll let you do the math, 60 amps on 30 cells. Has slightly less power than when the gas Quadra 40 was installed.

Data & pictures were posted here a few weeks back.
