Atomic Wedgee Build

This is my latest project for the slope.
The Atomic Wedgee is a 48" fully moulded wing for fast frontside and small DS sites not suitable for larger planes. That's the plan anyway.

Here's a few images of the design and early stages of moulding.

I'm blown away Shane. Love your work.

I don't quite understand how you made this plug? I remember you saying something about printing, but geez, that is smoooooth. Much nicer than I expected.

Tail looks a little small to me(JMO), but there is a nice long moment. I like the plug in tail. Maybe you could make a larger one for light days? Cool looking ship.

yeah, your thoughts about the fin is right Eric. I have already drawn up a new bigger tail but I will try this one first. I would like a bigger fin to fit a split rudder to slow it down as well.

Cheers

Good idea. Seeing Rogers yesterday, it was quite effective.

Awesome shape and finish. Welcome.
Maybe you can answer a question that's been bugging me for a while. How do you come up with the shape? Is it based on detailed aerodynamics, general principles or the "if it looks right it will fly right" principle?

Hi Batballs - I wish I had the time for a detailed aerodynamic study, but I have taken the easier track with this one and taken the advise of the airfoil designer as far as aspect ratio and taper ratio.

Then I looked at a lot of shapes of the latest pylon racers because they are designed to go fast and turn hard efficiently, just like DSing.

But at the end of the day I think there is a bit of the "if it looks right" theory involved.

If your going to go fast you may as well do it in style!!

Thanks, it sounds a bit like my approach except I sometimes substitute "builds easily" for "if it looks right"
She certainly looks sweet. If it flies half as nice I'm sure you'll be tickled pink.

Awesome work. How do you get such a great finish? Is the wing plug foam core?

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

I'd love to be able to sell a few of these but it's hard enough to find the time to build my own.

The wing plug plastic and finished with automotive paint and lots of polishing.

I've just been working on the parting board for the mould - I hate parting boards !!!!
