Herr Engineering Pitts Special

Has anybody out there successfully built and flew this plane?? Any suggestions for a power plant, building tips, etc.
I've tried a Speed 400 geared 3.5:1 but it doesn't have much zip.
Any help would be appreciated.

Built stock with only mod being the motor mount and the landing gear. Powered with Brushless Kontronik Drive 150 with Mini-olympus gear on 9x6 and 12 AAA NiMH cells with fantastic results. Long flights and aerobatic.

I would suspect a 480 geared would make one scoot well with 10 nicads.

Good luck - it is a nice plane to build and fly.....just does not do barb wire fences well

I have the Pitts, and a buddy of mine out here did one as well. We both flew ours on Graupner 480 geared 3.4.5:1 and ran it on an 8x800AR with an 11x7 APC E-prop. Worked pretty well for us. ROG in about 20 feet and 5-6 minutes of aerobatic flight. Search around in this forum and you should find a lot of threads.

Thanks for your replies Steve and Slope Nut.
I'll try your suggestion, Slope Nut, as it seems fairly easy to duplicate.
Nice lookin' bioe, BTW.

Jimmy Best, my flying buddy out here, stated his was 33 ounces with the e-conversion (not much of a conversion for this kit is needed). Mine is around the same weight if not lighter (my battery didnt have to go as far forward and we built ours exactly the same). They fly really well, and look great in the sky when all trimmed out with the starburst scheme.

A note of caution. Make sure your rudder is set exactly neutral for flight (hand launched this time) or your in for a real short flight!

My buddy handlaunched it for me (just to see if it would get away), and the rudder was offset for some reason. It spun in from about 40 feet nose in. Suprisingly little damage though. The cowl took most of the beating.
