Power on/off/charge switch. Simple, Fail-safe.

For those small models drawing up to 8A, the PLD-ESJ-CHG-08 represents a very easy and simple way of letting you turn on/off your model and charge your pack via the single port.

I was personally sick of having to fiddle around with canopies/hatches/wings every time I wanted to turn on/off my planes, so I did what every self-respecting engineer does... I came up with the solution

I actually have up to 20A versions of this but for now I'll keep with the 8A (10A peak) version to see how things. go.

The leads are 22AWG, but if you want heavier gauge you can simply replace them by soldering on your new leads.

Mounting is easy, two 2mm holes are 3/4" apart (20mm), or you can hotglue it to your fuselage side.

Using the ESJ is dead easy, you place it between your lipo and your ESC. To turn it on, just pull out the 3.5mm plug. To turn off, insert the plug. To charge, insert the plug, then attach your charger to the JST male plug on the 3.5mm plug.

No more need to fiddle around inside your small models and break things as you try to yank the wires apart.

This switch jack is vastly superior to normal mechanical contact on/off switches as there's no power going through the socket, it goes through the low resistance MOSFET instead.

If you ever wanted to have an on/off switch on your small park models, then this is the trick for you.

Get them here - http://nqrc.com/?vp=PLD-ESJ-CHG-08 (~$20 USD, $29 AUD).

Specifications

* Weight: 4.3g (0.15oz)
* Size: 24 x 14 x 6mm
* Voltage: 4.8V to 12.6V input (up to 3S lipo)
* Status indicator: LED ignited when power is active to the receiver/servos.
* Constant current rating: 8A
* Peak current rating: 20A
* Switch resistance: 0.008 ohms (8 milliohms)
* Quiescent/Off discharge rate: 16uA (6250hours per 100mAh capacity - that is 260 DAYS).

Some people have asked about the security of relying on the jack to remain inserted during storage/etc and were wondering if it's possible to also have a second slider switch as a master on/off.

The answer is, yes, it's very simple to do so (in fact, if you have soldering skills you can quickly add a parallel switch onto the system). I can also presolder a wire-pair to the right points on the PCB to add the parallel switch.

Guess the fault...

Quote:
There's a "small fault" in the ESJ-CHG-08 cabling configuration used here in these photos.

If you can see the mistake, send me a PM with the details and the first two correct answers will receive a PLD-ESJ-CHG-08 for free, shipped anywhere in the world (that's about $35 USD value).
The fault is that the plug on the 3.5mm connector is supposed to be a MALE gender, not female.

Come along people There's one left to go, don't miss out.

Incidently, you can always remove the provided wiring and install your own preferred cabling as well, just requires a 15~20W soldering iron and it's like doing microdeans connectors.

Congratulations to Rebell who picked up the fault and gets the ESJ-CHG-08 for his work.

The "fault" is that in the photos the JST connector coming out of the 3.5mm plug is a female unit, it is -supposed- to be a male unit.

Kiwi,

Should be good. I've got an EZ-Cub and EZ-Sport here that I will adapt too. The wings are easy to get on/off but I prefer to reduce that to a minimum since it's starting to wear/crush the wings a bit.

Rebell,

Thanks for that, will appreciate it.

In the meantime I think there might well be reason for me to start making a 20A class unit for those slightly heftier demand planes, along with adding the 'master override' off slider switch as well.
