Tiny motor choice. I need your expert opinion.

I'm building an original Tiny from the free plans and I need expert opinions on motor choice. Before everybody starts suggesting a brushless, it's not in the budget. My choices are A geared IPSDual or an M-100 because thats what I have. The leftover will end up in my Moth.

Thanks

Either will work fine. I ran an M100 in my old Tiny for a long time before upgrading it to a geared 010. It flew well on the M100 on Qualcomms and later 2x1020 Kokams.

The M-100 is a great brushed power plant for the Tiny/Tiny X. Like Tres said, it works great with Kokams, but it also works well with a 7 or 8 cell NiMH pack. It all depends on your budget.

power for the tiny

i fly the older tiny almost everyday.
if your tiny is really light...and perhaps you don't use landing gear like i do...then the dx-a would work....and you'd have a highly maneuverable airplane that can really slow down. you'd would also get the longest possible flying times. the only major downside of using the dx-a is that they burnout fairly quickly.

On the other hand, the m100 seems to last forever. You get slightly shorter flying times, but you also get a lot more power...almost vertical climbs... and enough power to do all the tricks in the book. The m100 is a bit heavier...so you get a bit more wind penetration....but then you can't quite slow down as slow as you can with a dx-a.

I use a 2 cell pack of 1020mAh kokams either way.

if I had to choose....I'd pick the m100.

Thanks guys. I think I'll rob the m-100 off my Moth and replace it with the dual. The m-100 seems to be the way to go for the Tiny.

Guys,
I see that NIMH will work with the M100. Are 370mah too small?
I have a 7 and 8 cell pack, that I fly in my Tiny-X, with the IPS.

thanks,
Jeff

m100 on 370mah

hmmm....the stock setup of the m100 pulls about 3.8amps?
for the 370mAh pack..thats a 10c discharge rate?...and a total flying time of less than 6 minutes?....possibly a lot less...like 4-5 minutes max?....ummm...it might work...i've never tried it but on paper it sounds like short flights and really hot batteries...
.....try slightly larger cells if u have to stay with nimhs?...otherwise go with some 700mAh etecs...or 1020mah kokams....

PA GOLD, here's a link for the M100. It shows as "on order" right now. Might want to shoot them an e-mail and see what time frame they're looking at to get more in. Hope this helps.

you can get the m100 motor w/gear drive and prop from:

http://www.jetsetairplanes.com

or

http://www.parkflyers.com

(they appear to be the same business....different names...)

thats where I got mine...not saying they are better than any1 else....just letting you know of additional sources....

a stock geardrive with similar performance to m100?

I was thinking of puttin a geared 280 on a tiny.....
its a little heavier than the m100 but at least its available at most places that sell gws stuff.

the one i have is the gws eps100c(cs)...
gws claims that with a 12x8 prop....on 7.2 volts this should draw 2.6 amps?...and give me about 7 oz of thrust.....i expect my tiny with this setup to weigh 6.x oz....

the geared 280 is cheaper too....(only about $12)
I'll let u guys know how it works....the only thing that scares me is that huge 12x8 prop...the diameter is half my wingspan!

Hi Guys/Gals,

I ended up picking a Tiny-X to try, couldn't find the GWS 4:33.1 gear box that everyone is using so I got the 5:33.1 with the Astro 010 14T and ESC combo instead. I'll be doing the rudder mod and using 3 HS-50s, GWS 4 ch RX and 3 cell 1050 packs from my micro helis.

My question is what prop should I use? I've got a load of 10X8s and 12X8s GWS orange props. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I want to be able to hover, should I enlarge the control surfaces? I'm not really worried about flight times since I've got loads of 3 cell packs.

Thanks for your help,

Aobid

==My question is what prop should I use?==

On the 5.33 box, the 9x7 is better for speed, the 10x8 for thrust. You can also try an 11x4.7 if you want to mess with hovering. It'll fly quite slowly, but the thrust is strong.

==3 cell 1050 packs==

1020 Kokams? They'll be fine with any of the above props. Performance is better on the lighter 600 HO packs, but the 1020's work too.

==BTW, I want to be able to hover, should I enlarge the control surfaces?==

To be honest, hovering is not the X's forte'. It's not really designed for that kind of flying. It might help to enlarge the control surfaces, you might even consider extending the tail boom out so it isn't quite as short-coupled.

Thanks Tres for the info.........

I'll start with the 10X8 and maybe go to the 11X4.7 for slow flight and playing around with hovering. I didn't want to get the X just for hovering alone, I thought it would be an all round good flyer for the front yard/street. Was using an IFO but wanted a change.

The 1050s I'm using are actually cell phone packs, a 3 cell packs built with connector weighs about 75 grams. I've been flying them in my PRO/Hacker combo and getting good flight performance and time.

With any prop combo I use, I'll be using the 3 cell packs only. Is there a chance that I'll overload the ECS? It's the Phoenix that comes attached to the Astro.

Thanks,

Aobid
