Highly recommend you read the tutorial at the begining of this thread. This statement tells us your not fully aware of how helpful it is in using these simple gyros, and how you can set them up.

If you'd like to learn more about autopilots checkout the UAV, FPV, and aerial photography forums here on RCgroups. There is a lot more indepth info on these types of units there.

Esky Gyros and my experience.

I bought three Esky gyros the #20 itens some 3 years ago.

I laid all of the radio componebts along with the Esky gyros on a 30" x 30"
piece if strong card board.

Nothing worked fir me. I enlosted the help of DAVE POWERS who is very familiar with the Esky gyros. After two hours we gave up.

The #20 Esky Gyros did absolutely nothing.. Ye we rotated the board while watching the servos.
I am glad you guys had more results. When we had THREE GYROS all fail to do their jobs, than it was not that one was faulty ALL WERE FAULTY.

Yes all connections wer etriple checked.

Even with gyros we still have to fly the plane, the real advantage is we are not stacking a valuable piece of property when we fly in winds that are far stronger than most would even consider flying in.
I fly with the gyro off mostly unless its windy and then for launches and landings ie close to the ground and at the real risky point. Nothing worse than watching a 15-20 knot gust lift a wing on the approach and your reactions are not fast enough to stop a nose in crash!
I guess some people like to pick up pieces of their plane or simply limit their flying weather?

yeah. i bet they disable abs and traction control in their car too becauwe they're too good for that

You know I've heard that the F-22 raptor is so agile because it's aerodynamically unstable and tail-heavy. The only way it can be flown is with gyros, and the pilot doesn't even control the control-surfaces, he tells the computer what he wants and the computer tells the plane what to do.

So i suppose the F-22 pilots must be pretty unco then huh?

F-16 I believe is also a "relaxed static stability plane" as well requiring a computer and gyros to compensate.
Like I"ve mentioned before, either you want to do this or you don't. Same thing with flybarless on an RC helicopter. Nothing wrong with technology if it makes it more enjoyable. All we are trying to do here is to educate, advise, and share.

Interesting stuff, I see it's cheaper on Hobby King's web site though of course the motion sensors (gyro's) are not available yet. May have to investigate, more toys

Hey gang, i have another gyro question.

I was wondering how a gyro on the roll-axis of a funjet ultra would respond to torque roll while hand-launching, lets say in heading hold mode where it should correct the plane back to where it started.

1st question: Would you just leave the gyro to correct the roll all by itself, or should you 'assist' the gyro by also correcting yourself by holding full right-aileron on the hand launch?

2nd question: if u did hold full right aileron on the hand launch, would the gyro 'know' you were just trying to correct the torque roll, or would it interpret this input as a command to roll around to the right, rather than just to roll back to level?
