Toys R Us giant foam glider to giant foam glider 3 Channel RC
To start - my journey to find a really big foam glider.
Hour 1 - Trip to Wal-Mart
After much looking, and talking to some not-so-helpful staff, my lady and I decided Wal-Mart doesn't have them.
Hour 2. Target! They're better than Wal-Mart... Maybe not so... No foam gliders here.
Hour 3-5. Toys R Us!
After much looking and asking some (quite) helpful staff... They had one left in stock!
But, it was BROKEN! Just the tail... bamboo skewer through it and some generous amounts of hot glue later, all better! fixed it.
Also got a %10 discount too.
They also had a small digital camera that takes video -and- SD cards, 12.50.
I will be testing it out on the slow stick today
Onto the build - pics will come soon. Forgot to bring them today.
Hot glued the wings on, and the plastic connector.
But SHIZZNIT! Glued the connector on backwards... Snap. Oh well.
I got the 'guts' from a Revell WhiteWolf heli, 2 180 motors, and a tail motor.
Replaced the tail motor with a linear actuator, works great.
Flight tests performed as 2 channell in my backyard... Haven't hooked up the tail yet.
First flight test - 1/8 throttle... Slow, gentle glide downwards.
Crap! Ground is coming at me. FULL THROTTLE! Suddenly it was vertical, 40 feet in the air... Aanddd... It stalled.
Back to 1/4 throttle. TREES! Smash.
Round 2. Fixed up the motors again, checked damage.
Launched, 1/2 throttle. Smooth climb. Noticed the wings bend.
Like, a whole lot.
The wings were bending so much, the wingtips were straight up!
In the shape of a U.
Attempt at more throttle and turn because the CRASH! Tree... Is right.. There...
And the stream my plane just landed in.
The motors need glued back on, and I will be placing them farther out on the wing. They're 3 inches out each side, going to try 6".
Debating on how to hook up the tail... I'll figure it out.
Thinking of cutting the elevator in half via homemade hot wire cutter, and using the act for it. Should be plenty responsive.
Things I learned from flight tests -
Should've hooked up the tail!
Need to add a generous balsa spar to the wings.
I have several 36"x1/4 inch spars to add.
Need to take it to the field. Not enough space in backyard.
Need's further rear COG. I had the tail with full up elevator to level flight.
The wings are swept back, so moving the motors should help with this as well.
The guts I'm using previously had some issues - the last few times I tried it, I would plug the battery in, arm the motors, and full throttle.. throw plane. And it would slow down, and cut off, much like the LVC.
Tried a few more times, and decided to check wiring.
Short circuits everywhere! I guess I'm lucky it's not fried. Fixed it now.

Do you have a SKU number for the $12 camera that takes SD?

I'm at work right now so I don't have the SKU, but it did come with Arcsoft.
VQxxxx is the name of it.

Yes, I got several of those from TRU but price was $22. I need to drop by again maybe.
They are a fantastic little camera and will take thousands of stills but unfortunately have very short recording capabilty regardless of SD size. Can be trimmed to 5 gram or less w/o case.

You will find there is a problem with CMOS cameras in general. Vibration causes "wavy" lines so it is usually necessary to stop the motor to get clear pics. I found it best to click shortly after throttle is cut (chan 3). Another trick is to continuously take pics every few secs and hope a certain percentage will come out.
