I think it sounds like a good idea. Unfortunately I just can't do it right at this moment due to some serious family stuff going down. As soon as I can I will see what I can come up with. Until then, please encourage them to check out our web site. I would really like to see the program grow.

Just curious, are electric sailplanes not allowed to be used if they are limited run?

Section 5 on the SSP requirements page http://sportsmanssoaringprogram.com/?page_id=33 will give you all of the information for electric flight. The SSP included e-power early on. With so many people flying e-powered sailplanes it would have been crazy for us not to.

Thats ok Zack, most people come to realize that "smoking" isn't the best thing for them either. (come-on we need to poke fun at the big guy's one and a while)

How do you track the flight for electric. I remember seeing a device that you put on the motor that cuts it of after X feet or X seconds of running. Is that what is used?

A watch and an educated guess work just fine. I use a z-log sometimes but if you ever launch off a winch or have seen it done you can guess close enough. An exact height or time is silly as even winch launches vary. Besides this is for fun right?

My formal training is showing. I went to school for mechanical design and I am in the mindset of everything being accurate... Perhaps I should get an altimeter to help me get and idea of height and for keeping flight record.

I am in the beginning stages of planning my winter project, an e-chysalis 2 meter. I just want to get the details ironed out before I start.

A e-chysalis 2 meter sounds like a really good project for winter. Building season is almost here unfortunately. If you watch the for sale adds you can get a z-log for as little as $35. It can be used as your witness for timed flights as well if there's no landing required. The good part with that is if you're doing a timed flight and someoine shows up in time to witness your landing the z-log data can be printed to show the time. This gives you a witness for both the landing & time. Just remember, you must include a copy of the flight data from your logging device when you file the form to get credit. Once again the info you need is in the requirements pages on how to file this.

Shalom!

I'm a little embarrassed by how little I've been able to work on tasks this summer. It's always in the back of my mind, though.

+1 for me too Family and other projects have been eating up all my free time this year. I'd say I have been able to go flying maybe 20 times all year I'm going to try to get out before winter and do something productive but we will see.

Don't feel bad guys. I started the program and have only been out 4 times all year and have not been able to work on the program at all. Between the weather, remodeling and my wife's health it's been nearly impossible.
