Scale PSS Project

I wanted to make something for Cajon PSS event (2004). I have been working in composites for the last ten years with models and full scale. I wanted to make something that was scale but big. I got my hands on a mold from a friend some time back. Won't say what it is yet but it is BIG! Started with the right side of the fuse mold. Polishing the mold about six times, wax on wax off - something like that. Wanted to get started so I gathered all of the glass and resin together. Cut up a lot of glass for this one. One side of this mold will take about six yards of glass 1.4oz, 4oz & 2 layers of 10oz. It took about 4hrs. to lay up the one side. Did I say it was BIG? Now it is time to lay up the other side. I will try to do it Thursday night.

I will put this out there IF YOU WANT TO SEE HOW TO DO WET LAYUPS AND GET YOUR HANDS ON.
I DO NEED HELP. You can contact Merrill at mmglidertech@verizon.net

After the two sides are laded up they will be seemed them together and pull out off the molds. It would be nice to have a canopy for it with a cockpit so I will make a molds for that as well. The pilot will be a GI-Joe Air-force from Hobby People.

All of the other parts have to be hand made as well. Like hot wire the wings, tail, stabs and make a mold for the spinner witch is 6".

OH I forgot to say what it is, IT"S A 20% Scale P-51 Reno Racer "Tsunami"
Span - 90"
Fuse - 85"
Airfoil - ZIP ZIP
Weight - ?

This was something that I wanted to share everyone and post some photos.
Here a link I found for the one I am working on.

Late as usual

Merril, why don't you just get the one Robert Cavazos has half done. His is not Tsunami, it's a Strega/Dago Red style. It's HUGE, it's one of them Madera racers. Your gonna need us to grade a runway at Cajon for that puppie.

Mr B,
Nice project! Sounds ambitious. It's good to see a nice meaty project like this once in a while. Please do post pics in this thread of the progress. I'm sure everyone would love to follow along with the building process (I know I would). That thing is going to be HUGE!!

It's done I have both sides now for the Tsunami.

I went to school last night and worked on the right side of the mold. It took 2.5 hrs 4 layers of glass and a helper to get it done in time. Then when I got home I had to wait to green trim it. I sanded the edges and will glass tape the inside in a day or so. There is a pilot F-14 at the hoddy store that is close to the same scale. Next thing to do is get the drawing scaled up to get the wing and tail plan form so I can cut the foam to size.

To let everyone know how things are going. I fiberglass tape both sides of the fuse together. Everything looks great and I shall get going on it a little faster now. The weight on the fuse is 5.5 lbs. I will be looking for a 6" spinner to make a mold off of. I may have to just make something.

Update:

I just got the pilot for the Tsunami the other day. This is a 6th scale pilot that is GI Joe size. It fits just right. Next thing I will do is make the canopy.
